apologies if this has been done to death, but what is the highest you can justify placing mike tyson in a heavyweight atg list and a p4p one and why? obviously his longevity, or more precisely lack thereof, has a big impact, how do we rate him prime for prime against the atgs? where do we say his prime was, pre or post douglas? and how much do his losses effect his standing etc, cheers! :good
He has d most impressive list of stoppage wins over bigger fighters and was good at fouling against other foulists (such as Bruno*2 , Holmes , Spinks (was accused of using elbows but IDK)) . But there was 1 foulist he lost 2 . 3 of his losses r considered well past his prime (Lewis , Williams , McBride) although people forget that Tyson was d younger man vs both Lewis & Holyfield and his most devout nuthuggers will say that he was past his prime in all of his losses . I myself doubt Tyson's being shot vs Lewis and remember that after that fight Tyson claimed that he needed another fight prior 2 it in order 2 get ready 4 it . His prime is considered short in years but long in d amount of title defenses in it . I myself don't think that his prime was so short in years . p4p I can excuse him being as high as #1 . h2h I can't imagine him beating a well prepared and motivated Valuev and I think fighters such as Bowe , Holyfield , Vitali Klitschko , Wladimir Klitschko (2 a lesser extent but still nonetheless) , Douglas , Lewis , Tua , McCall , Ibeabuchi , Akiwande , Foreman and probably even a few more really big guys , and I didn't mean that all d guys in this list r considered really big 4 me , would have always been a serious threat even 4 d most prime Tyson and a few of them (especially Douglas & Lewis ) were just d obvious waiting 2 happen . H2H I clearly rank him above Ali & Holmes as it is quite obvious that he would have beaten them badly Tyson jumping forward would have been quicker than Ali running backwards and would have caught him with bad left elbows and right uppercuts . h2h I can have him as high as #2 if I m in d best pro tyson mood (in which i never was at least since joining this forum) , because there is no tyson stopping valuev but there is valuev lifting tyson off his feet and his head off his shoulders with a grazing uppercut / hook .
I think prime Tyson breaks valuevs ribs seriously. I think Tyson bombs out wlad in two rounds, tkos vitali in 4. Kos Douglass in eight. Yeah Foreman's a serious threat so is ali because of his mental toughness and chin but I see Tyson stopping ali. Foreman im back and forth with. P4p takes division dominance into heavy consideration and Tyson dominated and unified. Christ look what he did to a highly skilled spinks. He's up their. Head to head Prime Tyson beats everyone except maybe Foreman Ali. Lewis would get kod tysons Head movement was a thing of beauty even though he got tagged. As for the longevity I I agree with others that he cemented his legacy before prison
Honestly he had a very short prime, as do most fighters with his fighting style, but in his prime he was a dictator. I'd allow him anywhere really, so much controversy, thats what makes me love him.
You simply can not justify ranking Dempsey above Tyson. Tyson had a better run to the title and better and busier prime, and fought real heavyweights with consistently better and more emphatic results.
Nonsense. Tyson was dominated and knocked out in for the count in a championship fight by Buster Douglas, IN his prime for all intents. How is that better than Dempsey's prime ? As for the thread question, it's really just a matter of opinion but I think anything higher than 7 or 8, or lower than 25, all-time HW, would be wrong for Tyson.
In the biggest fight of his career, he wanted to d.q. himself so bad that he started eating his opponent. When Mills Lane told him" if you eat any more of Evander you will lose" what did he do? This kind of character flaw would of surfaced against ANY atg heavy. He couldn't even go the Distance with Holyfield. He's not overrated... he's grossly overated.
True. But his string of KOs over world-ranked HWs in the late 1980s is probably enough to squeeze him into a top 20 or possibly top 15 list.
At hw 7 and that´s where I rank him. IMO he has a very good longevity for someone with his style. Vey dominant but against mostly mediocre or past prime opposition. Many title defences and beeing the second youngest hw champ ever are tremendous achievements. Douglas hurts him, as do the Holyfield losses - or more the way they ocurred. IMO not worthy of a p4p ranking.
tbf thats a long time after prime tyson, he'd been in prison, imo evander would have had a much tougher time with the tyson that demolished spinks
Tyson went the distance with evander in the 1st fight, and went out on his shield in the 11th....Or did you forget? :blood If 11 rounds of bombs isnt "The Distance" in your mind maybe you should switch to another sport....
