Mike Tyson's Chin

Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by DannyL12345, Nov 2, 2010.

  1. the key factor is.. Foreman was old against prime holyfield and he took every blow from evander. 30 years old tyson could not even finish the fight against past prime evander. So foreman had better chin than mike by a mile

i'm not going to argue much but i'll leave you with 3 thoughts (1) styles make fights. a fighter of frazier's style is more likely to knock down muhammad ali than george foreman's style. likewise, tyson's fighting style is more vulnerable to holyfield than foreman's style (2) rating chin or power is not an exact science so don't try to be too precise. who could guess that ali was almost knocked out by henry cooper yet was never in danger when taking huge hits against shavers? who knew that foreman would go down so early against lyle when holyfield couldn't take him down in 12 rounds? who knew that holyfield would get knocked down against bert cooper when foreman's titanic shots couldn't take him down? there are too many variables in boxing. (3) to counter your example, tyson never got decked by a single shot like the way foreman and ali did. tyson got discouraged against douglas and holyfield because he was getting outboxed and he couldn't figure out a plan B. it had nothing to do with his chin or heart. even after tyson took massive punishment, he was live in the fight physically but didn't seem to appear that way because he couldn't find a strategy. on the other hand, look at tyson vs ruddock 1. round 6 ruddock snaps tyson's neck back with a combination that would have ko'd 99% of the fighters out there. because ruddock wasn't outboxing tyson, tyson was able to stay in the fight with his chin and win the fight in the next round. (4) do not underestimate a relentless puncher who weights 200+ pounds like holyfield.

Sure he has a better chin.

But when Tyson gets knocked down, its because he's been BEATEN DOWN TO A PULP. i can not say the same for Foreman. Foreman's knockdown against Young can count, because he's tired and been countered all night, but there isn't really any exscuse for getting staggered and dropped by Ron Lyle twice. And don't give me that "bad mentally" ****.

Old Foreman also paced himself and used his energy better, thats why he didn't get knocked down as often. I also think the weight helped him take a shot better.

I think its better than Ali's to be honest.

Ali has been prone to getting dropped by a single hard punch, particularly a left hook. Tyson is not prone to getting dropped by single hard shots.

Secondly, Ali has a style that lets him backpedal. So if he's hurt he can buy time and recuperate and get back to his senses. This is why he was never really stopped in his career. He had a great chin and his ability to recover when hurt was top notch.

Tyson on the other hand has a style that simply continues to move forward not allowing him to recuperate in the same manner that Ali or any fighter who occasionally fights on the back foot would be able to.

    Tyson fought:

    Bruno
    Ruddock
    Lewis
    Smith

1st rate power punchers if nothing else. He took flush punches from them without faltering. He took their punches and kept coming forward. Holyfield caught him with a balance shot but he hit him with everything, including the kitchen sink (I think he used it in the 10th round) and Tyson didn't go down. He retreated briefly but his ability to absorb punishment was spectacular.

Douglas really hit flush with combinations.

Ali took punches from Top Rate punches but at least he wasn't getting his with combinations in any of his fights with the same regularity that Tyson did in any of his stoppage losses.

Don't confuse chin for recuperative ability. Ali had guile and savvy and a good chin with amazing ability recuperate.

Tyson had a better chin but style and perhaps lack of savvy to recuperate in the same fashion. But when it comes down to it his threshold for pain, at least physically the distinction has to Tyson.

    :lol::lol::rofl

trust me, getting fat doesn't make you any tougher. on tv it looks that way since the fat guy doesn't shake around as much. but fat on one's belly doesn't cushion the chin which is what takes the punishment. :good
