If Tyson retired after the Spinks fight, then many people would be predicting that he could have been the GOAT had he fought on for a few more years, perhaps including myself. If he stays on long enough to lose to Douglas, then that would have provided a serious reality check, regardless of how long he fought on. Even so, I think that most people expected him to regain the lineal title at some point after the Douglas fight. He was favoured over Holyfield, and without Holyfield actually beating him in the real universe, many people might say that he could have dominated the division until Lewis came along. I don’t think that anything that happened after that, made much of a difference.
Not at all. Tyson won both fights going away. He never really was behind, never really was getting beaten up. In the bouts he WAS getting beaten up he either was koed, fouled out or quit. Add to this he tried to foul out in other bouts and wanted to quit openly in one bout where he was eventually koed.
Great post. Accurate. I for one was mesmerized by young Tyson I truly believed he had the tools to the become the best HW ever. Post prison added nothing to his legacy. Had he retired after prison I believe he would be discussed as a top 5 heavy. His life outside the ring was a mess which led to a short prime and his stature didn't help either as a fighter who had to be in top shape to handle men bigger than himself everytime out.
