d'mato always taught tyson paitent agressiveness. not to chase knockouts. he was bulit to fight a certian way, as a swammer but he turned into a headhuter and subsequently go outboxed and badly defeated. once rooney was gone(the last link to d'mato) he became a fighter who was easier to hit, threw less combinations, went to the body less. a guy who relied way to much on power.

Everyone has lapses, I think its quite unfair to just single Mike out, Frazier was on his butt twice against a guy from Argentinia, Louis didn't take Schmeling serious in thier first fight, Lewis got Caught by McCall. Today Wlad freezes up everytime someone looks like they wanna fight him for real. No one is perfect, Tyson was really sloppy after prison, but a 4 yr lay off will do that.

Most people don't know how good a technician Tyson was before he went to jail, and came out very raw, Tyson in the 90s was still able to win because of his physical abilities.

As a pro tyson was excellent from 85-88. After he left rooney, his style changed, he was getting tagged too much, even in the bruno fight. Surprisingly he showed more movement in his loss to douglas, but not enough.

that and the competion. you got gus like mcneely, mathis jr. and seldon, you better be able to win. but in hindsight, this set-up a disaster against holyfield because tyson wasnt prepared and he thought holy was washed but at least holyfield had skills to fall back on. even holyfield said it an interview, he said he realized tyson hadnt been hit yet. he saw easier it was to nail tyson.

I'm not picking on him, i'm speaking specifically about technical slippage due to emotional issues which is basically what this thread is about.

Lewis getting caught by McCall is not the same thing at all.

well, luckily tyson had a great chin or he could have ended up like lewis. but yeah, it two different stories. lewis was green and on went on to improve, while tyson was declining. they were going in different directions.

Another part of what made Tyson the fighter he became, was that he had the emotional reassurance in his corner, because he trusted Rooney. Once he lost that, it also contributed to his future shortcomings. Proof that a solid boxing team is crucial to the fighters success.

Technically Tyson was a mess in his comeback, and King should have realized that as soon as the Mathis fight and made a change in his corner, when he was horribly off balance and swinging wildly.

he was terrible. none of the guys who he fought had enough skill to expose this. but holyfield sure did. if you remember the first holyfield fight, when holy dropped him with a body shot, the kd came as a direct result of poor balance. thats all he was doing, lunging in, while open, off balanced. nothing stricly head shots. its a shame when a fighter cant sustain his greatness.

That's because King isn't a trainer and he doesn't know anything about boxing. Only thing he knows how to do is make big fights, put dollars in a fighters pocket and than rip them off.

Fair to say one of Tyson's biggest mistakes was getting rid of Kevin Rooney? I wish I could see how Tyson would do if they were to pair back up.

Did you really need to go back this far to locate a Tyson thread?

:good Yes, very observant... this was his first fight without Rooney in his corner.
