They weren't unanswered. He threw a punch in the middle of them, and he answered the vast majority of them by blocking them with arms and gloves. It was clearly a very bad stoppage.
As you like. I am not going to get into "yes it was, no it wasn't" ad naseaum. That is boxing and it is always going to be that way.
I was a big fan of Weaver's too. His one punch KO of Tate is the stuff of legend. He also gave Larry Holmes a serious scare as a complete unknown. Holmes never fought him again after that. I agreed about the Dokes stoppage being premature. It was a minute into the fight and many of those unanswered 20-25 Dokes punches weren't even getting through. Weaver also had a habit of playing possum and then unloading. It was shortly after the Kim-Mancini tragedy and the ref panicked. Funnily enough that ref allowed other fights (like Tillis v Frazier) to go on far longer.
Oh yeah I'd completely forgotten their rematch as overweight 50 somethings. Still, it was about 20 years too late.
Weaver was a monster puncher .. the left hook against Tate and Williams .. the right hand that crushed Coetzee .. Weaver could crush it ..
