Patterson was very good, but really didn’t belong in the heavyweight division. He was a natural LHW or even MW.
Sort of like Duran who moved up to MW where he had to fight bigger and stronger fighters.

Matt, he simply had no choice but to belong in the hw division (at the time). He had simply outgrown the LH limit after 2-3 years as a professional and your MW query is simply inane!

He held his own against some pretty good heavies. Quarry, Bonavena and Chuvalo come to mind.

He won the gold medal at the 1952 Olympics in the middleweight division.
His first professional fight was in the same year, and he weighed in at 164.5, only 4.5 lbs above the middleweight limit, 10.5 below the LHW limit.

I’m not saying he wasn’t god enough. He certainly held his own against most heavies despite being undersized. It was a testament to his skill and athleticism that he was able to beat bigger and stronger opponents, but going against bigger guys with equal skill and athleticism, that’s where he could get into trouble.

He put Cooper face down and out with that "not much of right hand". Although Floyd's LH is HOF material, he was a combination puncher; read: hitting an opponent with BOTH hands.
I've seen, as many others here have, Floyd hurt many an opponent with that right often as a lead shot!

Come to think of it, he also stopped Johannson in their 3rd fight with a right hand. Maybe it just seemed that way because he used his left hook more

And I think it's the level of heavyweight too. I mean, I assume you believe that Patterson would beat say John Ruiz. Lennox Lewis vs Patterson on the other hand would be a destruction waiting to happen.

Interesting fight, Floyd was more skilled but Weaver could seriously hit Holmes claimed he was the second hardest hitter he faced after Shavers. Weaver sometimes started slow Floyd may land something big early and stop him but even when hurt Weaver was dangerous. Could see them splitting a series, maybe 55/45 to Weaver just because he was a little more durable..

Yes, as a 17 year old, and quickly outgrew that never to return.

I think that Floyd Patterson excelled well against some pretty big hitters, George Chuvalo in 1965, Jerry Quarry in 1967, and Oscar Bonavena in 1972. Floyd did have quicker hands, good combinations and good stamina. His left hook was a very deadly weapon, Ingo found out on June 20 1960. Mike has a lot of power, he is a plodder, who was being outpointed by Big John Tate in 1980, when he landed his left hook to end the bout in round 15. Floyd Patterson by unanimous decision. Mike can hit, but he is no Sonny Liston in 1962.

Great match. Lots of inside action would happen here. Two guys who could bang and both rise off the canvas. Patterson was more skilled but Weaver was a warrior. Not sure who I’d pick. Might give Floyd the edge .
