Mikey reminds me of the young ODLH

He doesnt remind of of Oscar. But the kid is very good.

 

Two different fighters, Mikey is main weapon is his right hand, whereas De La Hoya would take your head off with the left hook.

 

Mikey is very well rounded and is actually more poised than Oscar....but Oscar was way faster

Mikey is definitely missing Oscar's killer instinct, among other things.

 

Maybe more of a poor man's/less complete Juan Manuel Marquez.

 

I agree. Although, Garcia's well-timed left-hook counter was responsible for the first two KD's last night and was landing quite regularly, after that.

 

Mikey is much less aggressive and has less power, footspeed, and handspeed than Oscar, but a better straight right for sure. He also used his uppercut more frequently last night than Oscar used his in his time (which I always found odd, considering his left uppercut always seemed very effective.) He's a bit more varied offensively, but is less physically impressive and more of a counterpuncher than the boxer/puncher Oscar was later. DLH was more of a stalking mini-Trinidad at 135 really. He only started to turn into a boxer later on at 140 and beyond. One thing Mikey does look better than Oscar in though is his composure; DLH was good at following orders from his corner, but he admitted himself he could be affected by the crowds and deviate from his plan a little. Mikey seems very focused, single-minded, and has tunnel vision for executing the gameplan his corner gives him. That trait will serve him well before his career is over.

If Mikey Garcia reminded me of anybody last night, he really sort of reminded me of a smaller, better, Mexican version of Peter Quillin. Impressive power, good timing, nice left hook, pretty solid chin, but pretty inept on the inside with a low workrate/suspect stamina. Mikey does have an excellent jab, straight right, footwork, and control of distance though, so I fully expect him to accomplish more than Quillin in his career.

 

Different in my opinion. Oscar has more of a killer instinct, Garcia is more poised. Seems like Garcias has more one punch KO power too. Oscar more active and better stamina. Kid has a long way to go but he can get there as far as legacy.
