It's not wrong to say they have similarities. But Kessler has absolutely no inside game, JMM on the other hand can easily fight on the inside. As TFFP put it, Kessler wants to control things all the way, so he won't stay on the inside and trade punches. And my guess is he basically can't do it.
I can see Kessler in a war if someone actually stands and throws with him but hes quite big for a SMW and has power so it'll take a lunatic to try...maybe Froch...
Kessler if you ask me is better fighting on the back foot, he just likes to come forward more for some reason. Everytime Calzaghe led in the attack Kessler would win the exchange and round.
Yep, Kessler jumps back and sometimes doesn't get his hands up quick enough when somebody swarms him, thats how Calzaghe's flurries worked. You can't jump back and throw a counterpunch at the same time, and you can't slip a punch to counter if you don't move your head. I could see that being a problem against somebody with handspeed like Ward, but we'll see.
Well they aren't poles apart, but Marquez has a much better variety of punch and is more crisp in his delivery. Saying that Kessler is a much sturdier physical proposition at his weight, but that really isn't Marquez' fault since he seems to be constantly moving up in weight.
Round 4 Kessler counter punched the **** out of Calzaghe and being a fan of Joe I thought he was going to get KOed in this round. [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_5lQl_wjt4[/yt]
When you look at the shot selection of Marquez; a guy who can take an opponent out with an uppercut from either side, left hook to the head, left hook to the body, right hook, left hook, rear hand uppercut, lead uppercut, left hook, right hand, left hook, left hook... I WISH Kessler could do that. This thread is wind-up anyway..
Marquez has a little more in his arsenal but you are underestimating Kessler's left hook and uppercuts too. He isn't just a 1-2 fighter.
I'm agreeing with you. Marquez is the undisputed No.2 in boxing right, but Kessler isn't some "poor man's Marquez". There are similarities, but Marquez is a more polished version with better shot selection and a more stunning delivery. However, Kessler isn't Tocker Pudwill when it comes to comparisons. I think the OP was getting more at their patient, dismantling ethic, which is true. But, as you say, maybe its at different levels.
