The X-factor in this possible fight is the jump in weight for Kessler. It might not have any effect on him, but it is quite possible to have an effect.

Dawson is very-very fast and as we saw in the Calzaghe fight, speed can cause problems to Kessler. That fight also showed that Kessler has problems when facing a fighter that throws punches from different angles, and Dawosn IS punching from different angles and has a very high workrate.

Kessler has a great jab and great power, but he has a "robotic-like" kind of style and I doubt he has the ability to adjust his style in a fight, when it goes wrong for him. Dawson WILL have a slight size advantage, obviously is the faster of the two, and 175 is his natural weight and he's been fighting there for a long time.

I'm not saying Kessler wouldn't have a chance in this fight, but imo Dawson wins this, probably by a close but clear decision.

Kessler weight is 180+ on the night, having weighed in at 168 lbs. Why would the step up in weight affect him? He probably outweighs Dawson on the night even though he weighs in a division lower! If he weighed in at 175, he would easily outweigh Dawson by a couple of pounds...

Dawson walks around at 175-177 lbs. He actually puts on muscle during the training camps and then loses a couple of pounds of fat...Kessler walks around 185 lbs+. He has a hard time making weight. If anything, Kessler is the natural LHW and Dawson the natural SMW. Dawson would make 168 lbs easier than Calzaghe, Kessler, Bute do. The reason he's fighting at 175 in the first place is because that's where the big names were and because fights were easier there, earlier on. As sean pointed out, Dawson fights with his legs spread out, so his 1-2 inch height advantage would not be an advantage, heightwise either. About Dawson's high workrate...it cannot be compared with Calzaghe's...:good

...I still haven't seen an analysis that would make a strong case for a Dawson win.

I think the fight would be very close, with Kessler knocking out Chad in the late rounds. Chad would win the early rounds with speed, but throughout the fight Chad would get hit with too many shots and Kessler would eventually put him to sleep. Definitely want to see the fight though, I think it would be a tremendous fight!

If the weights you mentioned are accurate, then you have some fair points up there.

Personally, I didn't try to make a "strong case" about Dawson, I was just stating my opinion. But truth is, one could come up with the best analysis you have seen in your life for a Kessler win, but Dawson could win the fight.

I had seen some pretty good break-downs before the Mijares-Darchinyan fight that strongly made a case for Mijares, but Vic blew him out.

Plus, if you have already made up your mind on this one, only the fight itself would convince you otherwise. :good

It wasn't Calzaghe's speed that troubled Kessler -- he was able to counter just fine early in the fight, something you just don't do when you don't see the punches.

That fight was a monster for true boxing afficionados. Joe used a combination of excellent footwork, variance in weight of punches, a good chin and a burning will to grind out a decision.

    It wasn't the handspeed, yo.

Sorry, mate, but Kessler's weight in between fights is around 170-172 - not anywhere close to 180. Kessler himself has said this many times, and yesterday Palle said the same to HBO. Dawson on the other hand is 180++.

I'm not saying the weight necessarily is an issue, but Kessler would definitely be the smaller man both in terms of height, reach and weight. Kessler is more technically sound. Dawson is slightly faster. Kessler is probably the more active fighter with slightly better stamina. Both have good and probably equal power. Kessler has the better chin.

Kessler and his people have said:

"My dream is to become undisputed at a weight - just like Hopkins, Calzaghe and other great fighters - only if that happnes will I consider moving up in weight".

That sort of closes your thread for at least a 4-5 years. Let's discuss this again at that time.

Dreams don't always become reality. Even a fighter as good and well known as Kessler sometimes needs to take opportunities he might have liked to have put off for a while. In any case, it's an interesting analytical exercise, comparing two of the best young fighters in adjacent divisions.
