The jury still has to be out here. Kessler is technically better than Jirov, but so is Toney. It would be a match-up that is difficult to predict the outcome of. The best answer probably is that the jury still has to be out, also considering that we may not even have seen Kessler's prime yet.
I really like Kessler, one of my favorite fighters. But if Toney could take away his jab then he could be in real trouble. My first instincts would be: Toney UD
Two possibilities: 1. I assume that the fight would be made somewhere between their current weights, say cruiser. Tony is more talented than Kessler, but not Far more talented. And Kessler has a 10 year year age advantage her. 2. They both come in at current weight. Kessler would be vastly more nimble. Despite Toney' extra size, Kessler would have the bigger punch. And again, the 10 year advantage. Prime Toney should be able to defeat current Kessler at 168, though that's probable, and not certain. I believe you tend to both over-rate Toney and under-rate Kessler.
By the way.. how does everyone figure Kessler for " mechanical " or " robotic "? I mean, I'm not saying the guy's Bernard Hopkins, but at the same time he's not robotic. Even against Calzaghe you could see him attempting and sometimes suceeding at timing shots on him.
Please tell me the reasons, the evidence, why you think so highly of Kessler? What has he done? In what fights did he show you he could possibly beat a prime James Toney? I'm sorry, but I think this is ridiculous. It's like me saying Jeff Lacy would have a chance of beating Bernard Hopkins. You're talking two completely different levels of quality here. Kessler would have the bigger punch?! Despite the weight disparity? Not at all. I think we have to agree to disagree,as to me this is just ridiculous.
You have a demonstrated tendancy to label views that difer from your own as ridiculous. I will come back to this as I've gotta run. Cheers. Ok. Where to start ? I think highly of him because I've watched a number of his fights and I like what I see. He's not flashy, but he's technically proficient with a decent jaw and a hard punch that has often spelled KO. He has compiled a 40-0-1 record with 30 stoppages. He has captured the WBA title and later unified it with the WBC title. He had impressive wins over Mundine, Beyer and Andrade before his only loss. That loss came in a spirited bout with Joe Calzaghe. (Obviously much depends on how you rate Joe, and even though you rate Calzaghe lower than I do, he is the number 2 lb for lb in RING's list and is undefeated over a long stretch.) Since that loss he's bounced back to stop undefeated Sartison to regain the vacant WBA title. If you re-read my post, I said I would pick a prime Toney to defeat Kessler. I've addressed your concept of the ridiculous earlier. Before Jeff Lacy faced Calzaghe, there were many on this board who speculated about the outcome of a Lacy/Hopkins bout and a good few thought Hopkins would get starched. AFTER Calzaghe schooled Lacy, the concept might seem far-fetched. Hindsight is 20-20. Putting on extra weight above your optimum doesn't usually increase your punching power that much. Marciano had much more power than man much heavier boxers. I believe that Kessler's punch is bigger than Toney's. You don't. Looks like we disagree on this, then.
ive been trying to be diplomatic about this but ill just come out and say that i think kessler is completely hype, and i will continue to believe this until he actually fights in america and beats someone decent like pavlik or taylor sure james toney is overrated as hell but you can understand that when you watch his fights when he was coming up and he was talked about as being #1 p4p, the guy looked amazing kessler has never ever looked amazing, and hes never beaten anyone that a casual fight fan has even heard of his reputation is built up by calzaghe fans so they can say their man beat someone good so until im proven otherwise, my opinion of kessler is like b-hop's: KESSLER?!?!? WHO IS KESSLER!?!?
I think Kessler is vulnerable to body punches and to Joe Calzaghe. James has the chin and ring savvy to go after Kessler, but I worry about Kessler's jab and reach, and Toney's output for him to win. I would enjoy watching this fight. The buildup and pretalk would be fun.
Thank you! Toney would KO Kessler. There's nothing in Kessler's supposed arsenal that can trouble Toney. NOTHING.
Interesting that he has to come to America and fight someone decent like Pavlik or Taylor. We heard the same stuff regarding Joe, till he fought Lacy and BHop. We heard what a bum Arthur was, till he stopped the people's champion in 4. And so on it goes. A whole raft of posters predicted what a beatdown Lacy was going to put on Calzaghe, even knowledgeable boxing writers were 10 to 1 in picking Jeff. Freddie Roach predicted a massacre ! Later, more ESB posters predicted Bernard was going to expose the Eurobum. Where are Bustalip and BHopX and Tyson86 etc. now? I don't suppose they're gone, just got new usernames. And where's KilltheKing and his droves of experts who predicted a Pantera victory ? Haven't heard their drivel for a while, now. IMHO, neither of Pavlik nor Taylor are as good as Kessler, but you won't believe till you've seen, will you ?
