Actually its no big surprise at all.

Joe is stylistically a nightmare for Kessler and Joe just showed his greatness by adapting from the fifth round and forward.

Kessler won 4 rounds (and IMO had several close rounds) before Calzaghe took off to another level (6-11).

AND. Kessler had a ****in broken hand to deal with!

Almost no one actualy pays attention to this. Kessler could have done better against Joe ( I still have Joe winning UD though) but the fight could have been closer and more interesting with a kd or two.

What's so unbelievable about Kessler's talent? Kessler is just very fundamentally sound as he should be with his great amateur and pro experience. I would say he has unbelievable talent if he beat Calzaghe.

Calzaghe's also one of the best fighters of this generation, IMO, H2H the BEST fighter post-Jones P4P. Mayweather is the main competition for that, but he can't handle elite pressure fighters at all, Joe seems to be able to handle just about any style.

But I agree, a rematch would be even closer, one that Kessler could win.

Just know that he isn't dealing with a prime Calzaghe though, before you get proud as a fan of Kessler, he's dealing with a half shot Calzaghe who lacks his former punching power and former blitzing handspeed... but for some reason his incredible footspeed is still in tact mostly.

Who else can beat Calzaghe at 168-175? Maybe Chad Dawson?

The very fact that you put name and talent on the same level of importance discredits your opinion here.

He's already dominated an opponent better than anyone Pavlik has faced.

Why not just say talent though? Is Taylor automatically more talented because he won a BIG fight against a NAME in Hopkins?

this is true but i meant them hand in hand in terms of the draw. as in the bigger the fight , the more the champion has to step up.

Mikkel stepped up and made Joe work double-time. Calzaghe fans weren't expecting Kessler to win a third of the fight, or land with such regularity and variety. Losing in his only "big-name" fight is no discredit when he performed very, very well.
