Sure. (Mikkel isn't claiming he is English as well; he is claiming, rightly, that since he is fighting in the country of his mother's birth - Britain - and since he is fighting against a non-English opponent, and there are likely to be quite a few English at the fight - it makes sense to show that he is not THAT much "the other", "the foreigner", "the enemy", just in case the hostile crowd might be slightly pacified.

Of course, if I was Joe, I would wear a Welsh flag AND a Union Jack to get one back over Mikkel! (And I would forget all about that Italian flag)

 

Yes, I agree. Unless you have dual nationality, you shouldn't really do it. Trying to ingratiate yourself is despicable...BUT, if this is how you feel - like for example Joe feels about Italy and his Italian heritage - and it makes you emotionally slightly stronger to show your true colours, by all means, do it!

(I think Kessler doesn't do it for purely cynical reasons - I truly believe he DOES want to honour his mum and his connection with England, now, that he fights in Britain, alone, against Joe and 50,000 of his supporters - he simply wants to say: I belong here too, in a small way! You cannot have it ALL!) I think he does the right thing.:good
