The problem with wikipedia is that it relies on contributions. These tend to come from those wih an agenda (Tha CIA is a major contributer). It is good for a first reference but it should not be taken as definitive.

It is in the middle ages that official doccuments come into the picture. 1385 is tha oldest official doccument mentioning national use in the military.
