Despite being fired (hastily but somewhat amicably) by the Viking Warrior following the Andre Ward defeat over a decade ago, the man that brought him along from day one had continued to coach until the present. His newest charge was Abdul Khattab, a Palestian-Danish middleweight prospect who last fought eleven months ago in an unsuccessful bid for the WBA continental belt. He reportedly passed of an undisclosed 'longtime illness' (not Covid). Despite the shallowness of his lifetime stable he might actually stand as the GOAT cornerman in Denmark. The only real competition would be what, Johnny Antonsen?
Christian Christensen would have to be a shout. He trained Tom Bogs, Ayub Kalule and many successful Danish amateurs.
Curious has anyone seen Khattab? Wondering if there's an imprint of Kessler's style attributable to Ricard Olsen's influence. Maybe just sour grapes because of getting dumped for Jimmy Montoya, but a while back Olsen was quoted as saying Khattab is the better fighter than Kessler was at the same age. Abdul is currently 18-3-1 professionally and 27 years old. Mikkel at the same age (heading into his SMW unification bout with Markus Beyer) had racked up a 37-0 record against much better opposition than Khattab has faced.
I think I recall the interview where he said he was more promising. There were a trio of brothers, perhaps even more by now, and they were killing it it on the local scene. He was impressed at their natural ability from the start. They had raw athletic ability and mongrel..and Abdul was the best one. Whereas Mikkell took a year or two to come into his element. As you well know IB your boi had a cuppa early losses as an amateur. Havent seen much of any of them. Couldnt really say I saw that many stylistical similarities with the limited footage I saw ages ago. Other than Abs seem to have a good jab..he fought long and sort of pitched a little forward to add some inches to that lead hand, a little like Kess would at times. Obviously Kessler has enjoyed far more success as a pro.
