Everybody's acting like he's on a Mikkel Kessler/ Winky Wright hiatus. It'll be a year when Mikkel finally gets back in the ring. He fought in Feb. I realize this is out of his normal 3-4times a year schedule, but how many champs out there fight 3-4 times a year??? His son was born in Feb, his contract and negotiations with Top Rank were a couple months ago, and he would have been crucified if he fought Mora when he was scheduled to. He did not want the Mora fight. Damn...

But Pavlik saying now he is a middleweight why should he fight in the tournament at 168

 

There are still serious changes in his public character. Kelly Pavlik came across as the humble blue collar guy on his way up to winning the title.

The rematch with Taylor should have put him and his camp on alert. He won that fight on stamina and will and against Taylor who has known stamina issues, that can work. But this fight also showed Kelly's deficits and he would have done well to focus on improving. Instead he called out Calzaghe. This clearly indicates a loss of realism, anyone who saw his 2nd fight with Taylor knows Calzaghe would have slapped him silly. The prediction to knock out Hopkins was a terrible idea by Loew, as was taking the fight in the first place.

After the Hopkins debacle, there were excuses, Loew claimed he was not surprised by Hopkins' speed, Kelly said the loss had nothing to do with Hopkins's craftiness. If you get schooled like that and deny the fact that you were simply outclassed, that's a dangerous mindset for getting a promising career back on track.

Now Kelly talks like a complete *******, his comments on the tournament, his angry kid remarks about the alcohol rumors without a believable refutation...a lot of former supporters here have wondered what is going on with him. Kelly is too young and not nearly accomplished enough to turn into a diva. His comment that he would kick the butt of whoever wins the tournament are really misplaced as well. Whoever wins that torunament will have proven a lot more than Kelly in his career up to now. I believe he lacks the mentality of a true champion who can come back from a loss and improve, he is angry that Hopkisn derailed him, doesn't want to face his limitations as a fighter and is takes out his anger in stupid comments.

What are you talking about. Pavlik broke his hand during Taylor II and basically had to jab his way to victory. Please watch fights before commenting.

 

I watched the fight and was a KP fan at the time.

The broken hand limited his power, but his lack of variety and footwork had nothing to do with it. On his way to the top, Kelly could compensate for his skill deficits with his toughness, power, reach, chin. If he wants to be a great MW, he will eventually have to beat better fighters than Taylor that he can't just beat with better Stamina or toughness.

 

Kelly suffered a hand injury in the second Taylor fight. The decision to fight B-Hop started with Top Rank and came out of the blue to Kelly. He was preparing to fight PW at the time. Top Rank and Goosen could not come up with a viable contract. B-Hop was the best and only opponent available at the time.

Kelly was very willing to fight Cal. It's been said a million times over that Kelly suffered an elbow injury right before the B-Hop fight. He clashed elbows with a sparring partner. The week of the fight, he was on an antibiotic. Believe it or not, these are facts. If Kelly was 100%, it would have been a different fight. Not saying he would have won, but it would have made a difference.

Kelly has refuted the claims of rehab and alcoholism. He's a fighter, why wouldn't he say, he's going to kick the winners ass. Plus, by the time the tourney is over, Kelly will be a SMW. Furthermore, I think you would be pissed off if people were making unfounded and erroneous accusations about you.
