Just wanted to see how many of you were fans of Mills Lane as a boxing referee. If you were why? What notable fight do you remember seeing him referee? He refereed for a long time does anyone know what was his last fight?

I still remember watching him referee the Mike Tyson vs Evander Holyfield rematch.

My favorite is when he tossed Hopkins out the ring.

Mills is a legend, was great stuff in Tyson-Holyfield 1 when they were tying up evry 10 seconds he'd break them up yelling "Knock that **** off"

Mills: "Ah, cut that **** out!"

Bob Sheridan: "Referee Mills Lane telling the fighters to...stop that stuff."

Edit: Or maybe it was Ferdie covering. Either way...muahaha.

I always loved to see him ref. a fight.
Best for me was Tyson/Holyfield-fight. But there wer so many others.

I can still hear his: "I expect a clean, tough fight. Protect you at all time. Any questions from the challanger? Any questions from the Champ?" "Let´s get it on"

There were so many noteworthy things about him. He was a exceptional analyst and boxing historian. He had that special law-man-attitude. So lawful and fair-minded.

In an interview later he said, Ali might have lost against Liston in 2nd fight, cause Ali refused to go to neutral corner. Therefor the ref shouldn´t have pick up the count. And with Ali continuing danicng around without listening to the ref, Ali would have got a warning and maybe would have been dqed for that. That could have chance history not only of boxing. But nevertheless it would have been according to the rules.

Mills was one of the greatest refs ever! I wish him all the best!:hi:

I thought he did a terrible job in tyson vs holyfield, he never told holyfield to stop with the headbutts or else, basically him allowing holyfield to fight that way made mike go insane and bite.

Hell, yes I'm a fan of Mills Lane. One of the best refs around. No nonsense and doesn't intrude into the fight. Wish he was still ref'ing...:smoke

He favored Tysons opponents heavily in some fights, slapping Tysons arm in clinches.
