Were contenders like Mathis, Bonavena, Quarry etc really that far above the 80s fighters?

    You had
    Holmes
    Norton
    Young
    Ellis
    Lyle
    Bugner
    Chuvalo
    Coetzee
    Too. Marginally better imo.

I rate the 80s near the bottom as far as decades go.

    Not as good.

Thomas, Tubbs, Williams, Tucker, Biggs, Ruddock, Larry, Mike, Michael, Witherspoon etc were all highly competent talents

    Some incredible jabbers

For some reason, I count Holmes as an 80s fighter. And Norton I tend to give an honorable mention as being in a class by himself. Not an ATG but a little better than a contender.

Nope even then 70s were bettet:
    Holmes
    Norton
    Ellis
    Young
    Quarry
    Mathis
    Bonavena
    Bugner
    Patterson
    Shavers
    Mercardo
    Lyle
    Wepner
    Leon Spinks
    Stander
    Weaver
    Foster
    Tex Cobb
Yeah it was alot better than 80s which was the worse along with mid-late 50s and late 20s.

Leon Spinks wouldn`t have been a top contender in the 80`s and he was small, Foster was too slender for a heavyweight too.

Leon Spinks was stop contender until Qawi and his borther replaced him.

Holmes exposed Spinks and Foster would have been knocked out in a round by a prime Tyson just like M.Spinks was.

Holmes exposed who?Washed Spinks like Qawi exposed washed spinks but prime Spinks?Leon was better in his prime than his brother .
Foster would not be knocked by overrated Tyson because no one blasted Foster that early and Foster punched harder than Spinks and wouldn't be scared.
