yeah, miranda's lack of technique really bit him in the ass in this fight. if he could've straightened out his punches, abraham was toast. too much shoeshine activity which ended up gassing him. man, he should have just unloaded uppercuts.

i was leaning towards miranda in the rematch too but im not sure anymore. on the other hand, Abraham is so inactive it makes it a tough call.

while i was watching the fight, i couldn't help but think Pavlik would have put Abraham in the morgue.

but miranda was clearly screwed in this fight. i mean the scores were outrageous.

it would be hilarious if Newman was the ref again :D

I typically respect Al Bernstein's analysis.

He awarded Miranda the seventh and eighth rounds on points, however.

I have no explanation for this.

The rounds Miranda won were the ones where Abe was too tired to defend himself as well as in other rounds; the ones where Miranda's shots landed flush and almost completely unanswered. Round 10 is an example of an obvious Miranda round.

How he could come to the conclusion that Miranda won the 'boxing activity' in 7 and 8...:blood

I mean, he's usually quite good...

What if Miranda hits Abraham so hard that his eye ball falls out? But then Abraham still wins????....:think

In fairness, he watched the fight on video rather than at ringside, so maybe that new experience threw him off. (Showtime obviously did a voice-over for commentary.)

I thought the same as you. Abraham clearly is the better fighter.

I had it 114-111 Miranda without those ridiculous point deductions by randy newman (horrible horrible job) but including the two point deduction for the intentional butt.

Including the additional three points deducted, i have it a draw.

    Hometown decision.

This fight should've been stopped in the fifth with Miranda winning by TKO as the broken jaw was caused by an uppercut.

Can't wait for the rematch. Hopefully there will be a real referee this time.

Get Real. It was an easy fight to score. AA won 7-5 for a score of 115-109 with point deductions or 115-113 without. The head butt deduction was definitely justified and Miranda fought dirty as ****.

Can't wait to see him get knocked out again just like he did against Pavlik.

    A few thoughts:

    1) The fight should have been stopped in favor of Miranda. Abraham was in no condition to fight.

    2) The referee was atrocious. I thought two points for the headbutt was questionable, as were the low blows, but my biggest problems were this: a) stepping in and saving Abraham when he turned his back to Miranda on a couple occasions; and 2) not taking a point from Abraham -- or even giving him a stern warning -- for all the holding. Terrible job.

    3) Abraham is a better fighter than Miranda. He surveys the action much better, has better handspeed and has a tighter defense.

    4) Pavlik probably would beat up Abraham, as would any A-level fighter with quick hands and feet. He takes too much time off during every round -- and this is based on more than the Miranda fight -- and throws wide shots while lunging forward. A technician would work him over, and a stronger, rangier, more consistent guy like Pavlik probably would, too.

    5) Abraham should win the rematch. My greatest doubt is that the fight is taking place at 166, an advantage for Miranda. Abraham is topped out physically at 160, while the more slender Miranda will gain a little in terms of strength.

    6) Great rematch, and thanks to Showtime!

I wonder when that was recorded. This is the first US TV broadcast, so presumably they did their commentary recently? It's interesting then that they called it as though it were contemporary, without revealing the bias of knowledge of both fighters' careers since.

I just can't imagine Bernstein, who eats and drinks the sport, had never watched this on the 'net before like every other diehard. Very strange to hear him calling it (convincingly) as though it were fresh.

Our feelings were very much the same on that fight.

I said to my friend in the halfway through that Pavlik would slaughter Abraham:thumbsup Pavlik is as tough a 160 fighter as I've seen in a LONG TIME.

I'm also thinking Abraham can win the rematch because he was so affected by the jaw. He's technically more proficient than Miranda who will always be the banger.

I'm not sure Miranda can change what he is, I'm thinking Abraham might change his approach a bit and might pull it.

I'd actually like to have both of those guys throw a straight right hand at a measuring device to record their impact. I bet Miranda pumps more lbs out than Kimbo!

Randy Newman is hands down the worst ref today. The pt deduction from hitting on the belt were ludacris. the 2-pt headbutt was very excessive. even worse, newman never asked for the doctor to look at abraham. my lord, it looked like abraham was chewing a 2 pound wad of tobacco. yet for some reason newman can't figure out rabbit punching is illegal. worst ever

I think they did it recently, only after they purchased the video rights within the past month. Overall, it seemed much more "live" than a lot of fights that get re-dubs, like when Joe Mesi has done them in the past.

The only cheating I thought Bernstein did was saying that it was considered a wise move to push Miranda backward. You might have guessed that was the case at the time, but it wasn't accepted strategy until Pavlik stopped Miranda a year later.

My biggest fear was that they would pronounce the jaw broken before there was even any blood. They did a very, very good job, I thought.

Although Jim Lampley is my guy, he'd have sold the rematch in a more manipulative way had he been in that same position, so credit to both Albert and Bernstein for letting the fight unfold without advancing too much of an agenda.
