ATG puncher Terry McGovern had only about 5 KO wins in his first 20 fights and Arron only scored his 4th tonight but he looked a very hard puncher in there. Can anybody think of any other boxers who weren't scoring knock outs early in there career and then suddenly starting knocking everybody out? Or huge punchers with a low KO % and weaker punchers with a higher %

I always though Steve Molitor, when he put it together, was a bigger KO puncher than his 35% KO ratio would initially lead you to believe, especially taking into account the comp he was facing.

    Fighters that have low percentages but are much better punchers;

    Gavilan
    Holt
    Canzoneri

Sam Langford had raw power when he was smaller, but decimated much bigger blokes as he improved his technique as well as got bigger.

Dare I say Floyd Mayweather Jr.

He only has 25 KO's in 41 fights, but he always struck me as the kind of guy that when he really wanted to hit you then you stayed hit. When he turned onto the full offence mode, like against Diego Coralles, Phillip Ndou and Arturo Gatti, he could deliver "real" power punches.

Generally he likes to adopt a safety-first approach though.

I think with Aaron its more a case of him maturing, hes been a pro since such a young age, hes most likely filling out into his tall frame. he probably wasnt as well trained earlier on in his career, than he is now with Bob shannon aswell. Fair play to him anyways.

    Anthony Crolla

Sergio Martinez's KO ratio is just above 50% but we all know he can bang a bit.

He was levels above those three though. Classier fighters SHOULD stop overmatched opposition regardless of power IMO.

Floyd is a decent puncher though, due to his speed and accuracy. His % is spot on IMO, of course without hand problems he may have scored a few more stoppages throughout the years.

Yeah i agree that Maidana's % is slightly misleading but he does have some power.

Not sure I agree with you there. I think he could of got more stoppages if he let his hands go more but if he was a really big puncher he would of blown those 3 away much earlier. I think people do underrate his power though, he isn't a feather fist.

Witter didn't get many KO's to begin with, then after he lost to Zab he went on a long KO streak.

It's an interesting debate though. As Flea Man said above Mayweather has a hell of a lot of class, and if applied properly, that should supply knockouts and stoppage wins really.

Likewise at the other end of the talent scale, the likes of Marcos Maidana and Breidis Prescott aren't great boxers, but clearly have a bit of power.

As we know though, records mean nothing. I could knock out my granddad 40 times and have a perfect 40-0 (40 KO) record.. but it'd mean nothing. The same with Prescott banging out over a dozen guys in Colombia and Maidana in Argentina.. means nothing because we know literally nothing about the opponents. It's all on paper.
