calzaghe should've taken the pavlik fight, he would've schooled him secured his legacy and the money fight against RJJ would always be there.

    i agree with that route.

i always have said calzaghe has the style to shut pavlik down and it would be a more meaningfull fight.

also agree that jones fight could have been easily made afterwards.

now unless joe loses i think he will retire with the jones fight.

I agree, from a legacy point of view Calzaghe will be gutted.

Hardly any point in it for Pavlik now, he doesn't carry his power well through the weights and Calzaghes speed would tear him to shreds.

So does it seem now that perhaps Calzaghe has taken the greater challenge by facing RJJ as opposed to Pavlik?

Well. Missed opportunity, but the record will always say: after he beat Hopkins, the old man take Kelly to school.

I always said that choosing Roy was the smart move: Jones is ALREADY a legend who looked in decent shape the last time (and best PPV numbers this year) vs. a newcomer who might or might not be the next big thing. For the moment, it looks like he's not.

From the historical perspective, at the moment, a win over Roy would mean a lot more. We just don't know yet whether Pavlik will do big things or not in the future, and will all due respect, Calzaghe doesn't need another Lacy in his career, if he can have a Roy...

He cant win even if he wins - he beats Pavlik people just go on about how overrated Pavlik was - Bhop beats Pavlik everyone goes on about how great Bhop is - he beats Bhop albeit a sloppy painful fight to watch and slightly debateable and there is some x files type conspiracy that Bhop 'chose' to not win.

Look at the forum - the majority of people (yanks) will never be impressed by Calzaghe.

    Calzaghe should retire.

I'd have much preffered a Pavlik fight from an entertainment perspective, but when Calzaghe would've had his way with him do you think he'd recieved even half the praise Hopkins is rightfully getting now?
    Somehow I doubt it.

Also he's allready had two fights against the young up 'n' comers in Lacy and Kesssler.

No. He would have schooled Pavlik and the usual, "he was always a bum anyway" would have started to discredit anything JC did. Hopkins whooping KP does more for JC imho, and vindicates him. But of course, he was scared wasnt he:rofl

Perhaps we should just give Joe props for persuing the harder fight.

Now Calzaghe's getting criticism as it's now apparant he's taken the harder fight in Jones?

People have mouthed off in the last few months that seeing Pavlik v Lockett changed Joe's mind about facing Pavlik. Initially I dismissed this, but rethought it a couple of months ago and it occured to me that it might actually be true, just not in the way people think.

My theory is that Calzaghe, feeling his powers diminishing somewhat, initially felt that he would need to take on the young upcoming guy as soon as possible. After getting a close up look, he realised that the style advantages he had over Pavlik and Pavlik's one dimensional nature meant that he could afford to wait for him and take a more dangerous fight first in Jones.

Probably the only thing he didn't factor in is he probably expected Kelly to fight another Lockett-style bum to stay busy, rather than a fight he was likely to lose.
