Can anybody give me some insight on how Edwin Rodriguez looked last night, and also Johnson? Would be much appreciated, I am a huge fan of Rodriguez and have heard really good things about Marcus in the ring and they are two prospects I would like to follow and keep an eye on, so if someone can tell me how their performances were last night, thank you.
Rodriguez is decent, but has a lot of flaws, keeps dropping his hands, got caught and stunned a good few times. He ended it with a very nice body shot, but he hit this guy with everything in the book and couldnt hurt him to the head, and Engel had apparently been KTFOd in the past. Overall he's got decent fluidity in his combinations, but he's way too flawed for the top level at this moment in time.
Thanks bud, damn, I have high hopes for this kid but that doesn't sound good at all. I have seen four of his other fights and in two of them he looked excellent but the other two, **** poor. Not something you would expect out of someone with his amateur credentials. From what I have seen, I too think he has a bit of a suspect chin and has some real trouble cutting off the rim, and another thing that stuck out was that he doesn't throw the most accurate or crisp shots at all.
Don;t worry it was the usual showbox crap. Shitty prospects that won't amount to anything versus rediculously crap competition with massively blown up records. I'm starting to think FNF puts on a better show. That assided I stayed up to 1 am watching it and enjoyed most of it...
Actually, it was an Interesting fight-card to watch. 3 Super Middleweight Prospects (4 if you include Johnson's undefeated opponent). And pretty much what you saw was 2 HYPE-JOBS and one fighter that has some serious skill!!! Edwin Rodriguez was fighting a guy who actually began his fighting career as a kickboxer. And was just recently STOPPED by a 4-11 fighter. And Rodriguez fought "Tooth n' Nail" to beat this guy. He looked slow and technically awful. Don George has the "prototypical look" for a Hype Job. A Good-looking White kid with a nice Physique, Personality, Charm and some (although minor) skill. Decent Jab, throws nice power shots, but his movement could use some work and needs to be more "Polished" before being called a contender. Marcus Johnson (Main Event) had the most skill of the 3 prospects last night. And at times you can see the vast array of skill (Speed, Timing, Movement, Solid Crushing Jab, Combinations) but to be honest...His opponent Derek Edwards was undefeated 25-0 (I think), and I was AMAZED how technically skilled he was for only having 6 amateur fights. This was a good test for Johnson. And you can easily see why he was the "Main Event" even though Don George was the HOME-TOWN FIGHTER (Chicago).
I think Edwards and Johnson were the 2 best fighters in on the card, and I hope Edwards gets more opportunities in the future before it is too late for him, he is very talented. Maybe he should try to hook up with Jeff Mayweather.
I enjoyed it, but then again I'm not just a casual fan like yourself who only cares about the most popular boxers.:bbb
And am just not saying this for the hell of it, but I'll miss Nick Charles badly.. he's an excellent commentator. :-(
Now that you mentioned it, I have to say I liked Tarver's commentating. He was spot-on most of the times, and he had a point when he said Johnson should be looking to close the show strong in the last couple of rounds. On topic: I agree that Johnson looked the better fighter out of the three winners, but I have a feeling Rodriguez could give him trouble because of his style, if those two were to meet.
