his amatuer record stands up. the pedigree was there, maybe green was too much of a jack ass to make a good pro? hapens all the time. guys like green always think they can run the show on their own and confuse themseves with being a big time deal maker, it never works out.

 

He was a good amateur from what I remember had some size and power for a thin guy but became a half a crack head and stick up shake down guy as a pro..Odd that he never caught a bullet in some of the ares he hung in N.Y....wasted life

 

Problem for Green is he had no power. He slapped with his punches. Sure he was quick and tall and had a chin, but let's face it, against Tyson, he threw a bunch of amateurish slaps as he moved, and then grabbed a bunch when Tyson got close. You can go 10 rounds with a guy if you grab all the time and you have a bit of a chin. Not impressed.

 

I think what needs to be recognized is that the guy had potential, but never followed up on "what could have been". If you do some research on the guy you'll discover he wasn't smart enough to get himself where he needed to go so he teamed up with Don King. He got sick of King not being able to get a match for him, so he got even crazier. Then King got sick of Green's crazy attitude and threw Berbick at him when Green really wasn't ready for a "crazy" swarmer* like that.

Stuff like this is a two way street. But Green can't be the total blame his career went off the rails, although he did help push it off the rails. It's not like he tanked like Percell Davis. Green just ran into a situation in which he felt he was "better then that" and King disagreed. Then add to the fact that Tyson is being raised through the ranks and you can imagine how distracted King was. I doubt Green's best interests were on King's mind at that time, and Green's personality didn't help either.

You know he had some form of ability, as raw as it was he looked great in the NY Gloves videos that were on youtube.

* If you've seen Berbick's style, "crazy swarmer" fits the bill. He was as rough as Wepner in terms of fighting style, but like Wepner he was durable and able to charge forward despite the lack of ability.

 

I think Berbick-Green was a majority decision. I dont know how close it was though. I never saw it.

I think there was some drama, some sort of scuffle at the pre-fight press conference too, which is to be expected with those two. Two of the craziest heavyweights ever.

 

Probably got caught up in the drug game too much, it's one thing to lose to Greg Page and Tony Tubbs as an amateur, but another to lose to Alfonzo Ratliff.Plus, there was that fluke loss in the 1978 Golden Gloves.

 

What was the story about Green sparring Holmes? Didn't he give Larry some problems or some such?

Maybe he was a guy that did best behind the scenes with the pressure and spotlight off of him, like Andrew Golota. *Shrugs*

thats what i kinda remmember from the fight...its prolly been 15 maybe close 2 20 yrs and allot of beer since i have seen a tape of that fight...

 

it wasnt a peak tyson he was a novice and still only 19! 6 months to a year later he would have knocked green out same with quick tillis .

 

No one truly knocking Green out.Maybe a Foreman or a Shavers, but I seriously doubt they would do it.
