Don't hear him mentioned as much as Chuvalo, or even McCall, but supposedly he had an ATG chin. Thing is, I'm curious if it was ever tested. I know he fought Tyson, but supposedly he got by on being tall and holding a lot. Didn't Tyson break his ****ing hand on Green's head in a street fight? Anyone have any stories?
That's because he wasn't nearly as good as those guys were. Green was known only for going the distance and losing to an inexperienced Tyson and a past prime Berbick. Thats it.
And if not for the infamous street brawl he'd prolly be mentioned/remembered about half as much again, if that.
I think Green would have done a hell of a lot better if he had the right plan to become a contender. However, I wasn't around for his 'rise' into the rankings. But apparently he had the talent.
Green has an eccentricity I've always wondered about, as far back as his early days in the New York Golden Gloves: I've never seen him without a toothpick in his mouth. He'd have it in the corner of mouth entering the ring. Give it to his mother just before the bell rang. Even now, for whatever reason he's on TV, he's never without that toothpick.
Green lost a few teeth in the street fight. Also held the WBS title, beating Danny Wofford (17-94-2) in 2002.
Exactly. Green simply did not have a long enough, or distinguished enough, career to merit mention with those iron chinned luminaries.
Green was a nut. He could have had a good career, probably not a champ though, but he was a nut. Anyone remember wen he got busted for driving while watching televison set on car dashboard, in going through red light? He had something like 51 previous licence suspensions. I once saw him train in a gym for afew weeks, he went through 11 'trainers" He would let someone be his trainer--sometimes just some idiot hanging around gym, then next day ake liike he did not know them. There were rumors he was on drugs, which his behavior would bear out, imo. There was this little ******* with some Muslim name--Black guy--who was hanging around, trying to pass self off as ex-fighter. Green got n conversation, let guy train him 2 days, guy is telling everyone he's Mitch Green's trainers. We're all laughing, caus esure enough, Green walks in 3rd day, and a regular trainer (who must have needed days pay) greet him and starts hanging out with, getting ready to work him out. Little ******* comes in, and looks like he wants to cry. Like Green betayed him. One time Green almost had fight with Veruit brothers, who were also nuts. He was being rumoured to fight Bonecrusher Smith, and on eof the Veruits starts yelling at Green (who he does not know as friend) "Bonecrusher is our man, Bonecrusher will kick your ass" and do on. Green goes nuts. He's 6'6", Veruets are all 5'7 and under. They yelled and circled each other for a while, it looked like wrestling, when one big wrestler is going to take on midets. Somehow things got calmed down. As amateur he was very good, but threw any pro potential away with his wacky lifestyle.
Damn, man - that was an interesting story. One of the more interesting I've read around here in awhile. Figures it'd be Mitch Green!
He didn't have as many fights as he could have, but he's never been down amateur or pro, and that includes a bout with Igor Vysotsky.Probably could have been a very good contender, maybe champ. He definitely could've beaten a Bonecrusher, or James Broad type fighter with everything in place.
Yeah, i remember him as a nut, like Hank describes. The craziest guy in boxing at the time, excepting perhaps Camacho. I hear he was high up in Bronx street gang, the Black Spades, and I think that was probably the closest he came to conforming to society ! Won the NY golden gloves a few times as an amateur, I think. New Yorkers here might know more about that. The world of professional boxing seemed to tip him over the edge of sanity though, and his career never amounted to much more than prospect/fringe contender. He disappeared from the ring for ages after Tyson beat him, and I have a feeling he missed out of a fight with Bonecrusher when Smith was called in to replace Tubbs against Witherspoon. More fights with Don King ensued.
The person who I personally thought showed the best chin against Tyson during those Undisputed Championship years was Tony Tucker who took him 15 rds and after around the 9th Mike seemed content to just go the distance and he was getting tagged hard n often early if I remember correctly.....All Time I think Jake Lamotta had one of the best chins; Carmen Basilio too.
