I think that if this fight is not selling as well at it possibly should I think that Mitchells promoter could move it to Manchester to get some ticket sellers on it...:yep Do you think that they will bang out the o2 or Upton Park...:think Do you think that the Olympians will get a night out on the undercard...:think Get it to the home of British Boxing...MANCHESTER, ENGLAND...:deal
Me too....you only have to do the sums to know that Frank is on a bit of a hiding to nothing...speculate to accumulate and all that, but it is a risky tactic
I thought this fight was for the full title? I thought JMM had to fight Katsidis after the Eskobedo fight or drop the title?
There have been a few schemes put forward..... the two main ones are either beside Elland Road stadium, and the other just off J45 of the M1. I'm not sold on either of them, they'd be better shoving it in the town centre, even down by the riverside if necessary instead of all those flats that will never be sold!
I thought a scheme was pretty much nailed on, planning confirmed etc...the people who run Sheffield Arena were kicking up a right fuss
Didn't Tszyu get like £2m to come over and fight Hatton? :huh But Hatton could pack out the MEN and Frank had Box Office and Showtime money. I don't think US TV will want Katsidis-Mitchell but it'll be on PPV in Oz.
I've just had a quick look.... they've settled on a site at the back of the Merrion Centre, near Grosvenors..... pretty good placing I'd say. Planning is confirmed and they expect to appoint a contractor this year. Not sure about the professionals they've chosen though..... could have done better myself :-( In fairness I'd not read up on it in a while :good
**** me, Leeds doesn't have one either:yikes? Isn't Leeds the biggest city in Yorkshire as well? We have this problem in Bristol as well and it's ****ing wank considering that Bristol is the biggest city in all of the South West and Wales. The money was there to build an arena in Bristol a few years ago, but local councillors spent it on having a booze-up abroad and then deciding that plans should be halted in order to make money from selling land that was earmarked for an arena for people that actually live in and around the city (no joke). The amount of money I've spent on watching live music all over the country is astronomical and it's a ****-take everyone has to travel so ****ing far for something that seems plentiful elsewhere in the country. Hopefully initial plans become concrete (excuse the pun) and we finally get our arena alongside the new City stadium. Regarding Mitchell-Katsidis, I can't wait to see how Sky market this one. Would they really have the audacity to bill a PPV as for an 'interim WBO world title'? Katsidis wins:deal.
Leeds has got plenty of ''venues'' to cater for events that will attract around 1000-2000 people, they could hold boxing shows in the sports hall of my old high school rather than taking them to Barnsley Metrodome :yep But after that, you've only got outdoor venues like Headingley (either the cricket or rugby stadiums) or Elland Road..... maybe the John Charles ''Stadium'' - a rugby pitch with an athletics track and half a stand (finished in '96 :-()
I've serious doubts that the project will be a success. Knowing LCC as I do, they'll have gone for a smaller capacity, more ''hi-spec'' arena with all sorts of fancy **** in there rather than something practical. Throw in the questionable choices of professionals... all I can see is trouble. I hereby predict..... 1. It will over-run both it's time and budget constraints. 2. When it does open there will be **** loads of complications with it. 3. Because of the aforementioned they won't attract **** all worth staging. :smoke
I work on the business desk of a British national newspaper, I sit next to the sports desk... Mitchell is the worst sold fighter in the UK. Forgetting the fact that I think PR should be banned as a profession, the publicity surrounding Mitchell is appalling. The guy could easily be marketed - forget what you actually think about him -as the Nigel Benn of this decade. And this fight, well... if there were enough people in communications who loved the sport there'd be no worries on selling it.
