Okay, so if you could combine the characteristics of any group of fighters from the same weight class to create the perfect fighter for that weight class, which characteristics would you take from which fighters?

For example, to create the perfect heavy weight, you might want a fighter with Ali's chin and speed, Frazier's left hook, Holmes' jab, and Foreman's power and upper cuts.

So, what do you think? Who do you combine to get the perfect fighter for each weight class?

First thing a guy needs is ringsmarts. The greats know exactly what to do at the right time & what to not do.
Next is defense. Work on not getting hit.

You can count on your thumbs the great fighters without ringsmarts and without defensive skills.

    Heavyweight:

A mix of superb athleticism, height, length, power and perfect technique...

I believe the esteemed Michael Katz called this one out:

    Michael Grant.

    Hmmm.

From Jem Mace: His head movement.

    From Joe Choynski: His gameness.

From Jim Corbett: His ring generalship.

From Bob Fitzsimmons: His straight left.

    From Jess Willard: His endurance.

From Jack Dempsey: His inside game and his left hook.

From Harry Greb: His clinch and his hand speed.

    From Charley Burley: His footwork.

From Rocky Marciano: his conditioning and his right cross.

From Mike Tyson: His right uppercut.

Of course it's difficult to tell what the results would be mixing pressure fighters up with crafty boxers like this!

A common trap that many fall into in this type of "Jigsaw"fighter composition, is simply picking the Best attributes of Great fighters, without much thought to how the atributes would function when harnessed together, Ali's footwork with Listons Jab, Marciano's Right Hand, Tunney's Intelligence, and Fraziers Left Hook, Seems an unbeatable combination, in truth welding the assets of a Driving forward fighter, with those of a Mobile Elusive type of fighter, will produce a rather confused fighter, who might end up tripping over his own feet before tripping over his opponents left hook, !

I thing the assets need to come from a similarly styed fighter, to compliament each other, and acheive maximum effeciency.

1967 Ali with the power of Lewis would be pretty close to perfect or at least almost impossible to beat.

Many people say Thomas Hearns with Hagler's chin would be the greatest ever - but who's to say he'd fight the same? I could imagine Hearns brawling and, while surviving, losing points to better infighters.

Likewise; Muhammad Ali wouldn't be himself with Sonny Liston's power, because he'd need to set himself more to deliver punches like that as opposed to fleeting round the ring. Area 53 touched on this above.

Now, more realistically, if you gave Joe Frazier an even better jaw, say, Oliver McCall's, a right hand like Mike Tyson's (can't say Joe Louis', his punches were too different) and added in a little more 'brawlers' ingenuity' from Rocky Marciano you'd have probably the greatest heavyweight of all time.

But personally, my pick for the greatest ever would have to be Archie Moore, fighting his same style, with a Sam Langford jaw. Imagine it.

the power of lewis? lewis was not the most powerful so ali would not need the power of lewis. ali 1967 would beat anyone, with more power or not.

    1. Lennox's right has the most raw power in history.

    2. I already favour Peak Ali over everyone, but he'd be even better with great power.

AREA 53 and Manassa are on the money. These kind of threads simply aren't practical.
