I was rooting for Caleb Truax, Erislandy Lara, Ricardo Mayorga, Jhonny González and Lanardo Tyner. The first three lost (via UD12, SD12, and TKO8 respectively - although none of them got outclassed, and there is maybe a smidgen of controversy in all three results) while the latter two were victorious by wide decision (El Ratón pitching a three-card shutout, 120-108 x3; while Pain Server got scores of 99-91 x2 and 98-92). Truax vs. DeGale II didn't really interest me too much; I've just known about Truax longer than most and loved the rags to riches underdog story and was hoping to see him repeat even though I knew deep-down that even the flawed and ordinary (by world class standards) DeGale was a level above. Lara stung, because it means that I've lost my first ever avatar bet and will have to surrender the pic of me with Tony DeMarco until...I think July. Also because I talked endless **** about Hurd being too basic to hang with him. Mayorga...well, he's Mayorga. In the year 2018, no less. I don't really know that I was expecting him to look great or even get the W, but the fact that he rallied after being two rounds in the hole early and was looking halfway decent before a questionable stoppage made it somehow bitterer than if he just had looked crappy and gotten blown out quick in the first place. I still haven't seen the González vs. Cabrera fight, but am checking out Tyner vs. Andre Byrd on FB right now. I also kind of low-key wanted Karim Mayfield to get upset by Gaku Takahashi, and it sounds like he nearly did but got a gift decision. Mayfield dominated early and nearly scored a knockout in the second but punched himself out and had a rocky time down the stretch.
I once set Waltzing Matilda to play 6x in a row on the jukebox at Charlie's Kitchen upstairs in Harvard Sq., best dollar fifty I ever spent. The small army of PBR-chugging hipsters went from appreciative to "eh, again?" to "I actually love this (ironically)" by the fourth spin to "check please".
I’m actually happy for Truax that he lost, provided Degale does the honorable thing and grants the immediate rubber match. Although their styles do not make for an entertaining clash, they can play the tie breaker angle for a sizable payday where neither fighter risks getting thoroughly outclassed.
That's a good point, this result does guarantee him at least a return with DeGale (assuming Chunky does the right thing and/or has the competitive urge to go ahead in a trilogy) whereas Truax winning might have put both in a tough spot: DeGale on an 0-2 skid, of course, and Truax with the stigma of apparently being a risky guy that had been lurking under everybody's nose but who isn't really a financial draw. They wouldn't be able to have a third fight if DeGale had lost, and the chances of either securing a big money fight with anyone else would've been slim.
I actually think a Truax victory tonight would’ve made him the “champ” that every shrewd promoter would look to match his prospect(s) up with, for what they would presume to be an easy title to acquire. As you said, I think they would have shorted him on the purse too. At least with Degale, Truax has earned enough respect in the U.K. for his first victory and for what seems like a decent character that he will make the most money in a 3rd fight with Degale, despite Degale’s obvious slippage as an elite fighter.
Wait, THAT Ricardo Mayorga? THAT one?! I had no idea he was on the card. He should have been the main event! How did he look?
Truax looked like it was his first day in a boxing ring. he and Degale can do whatever it is they call that (greco-roman boxing?) in a garage somewhere and let us know who has the belt, so we can find someone to beat their ass.
You're lucky you didn't watch it, and sadly no, DeGale isn't a level above, there was nothing dominant about that performance, it mostly consisted of DeGale holding or running, and Truax smothering his work and looking gassed, oh yeah, and the headbutts, they were more plentiful than actual punches landed. DeGale should have taken another L tonight. It was a deplorable performance. Pinoy had it DeGale 114-113 I had it Truax 114-113 Drew had it a Draw He's done at the top level, I think CEJ even beats him at this point. That's how awful he looked tonight.
