im starting to not like mma. after watching the last ufc with penn and sherk and ortiz and machida, i just realized that mma is turning into a boxing match. the penn and sherk match was nothing but an amateur boxing match! might as well just have watched hbo boxing.
Ortiz/Machida I could maybe see kickboxing, boxing is a stretch, because I can't remember many recent fights where one boxer was using kicks as his main offensive weapon.
I agree to some extent regarding the aforementioned fights- but did you watch the rest of the card?? There was some great subs and some groundwrok going on there. In the case of Penn and Sherk, it was tactical for both men to stay on their feet. Sherk thoguht he was competitve inh the exchange and could have possibly been wating for Penn to tire before going for a TD. If both guys are incredibly well rounded you tend to get them staying on their feet because it gives more oppurtunity for a quick finish e.g Penn's knee and ground and pound on Sherk. I think as a whole though, MMA's still great to watch- but like with anything there will be fights that don't impress you or don't measure up to other fights you have seen before.
Penn-Sherk was actually sort of refreshing. Context matters...alot. Knowing both these guys' styles and watching that unfold the way it did was very cool. Especially as a BJP fan.
I read a lot of post about MMA. usually negative someone is either complaining about the lack of boxing ability or there is too much grappling now too much stand up. do some of you like this just for the pure entertainment value or do you get involved in the strategical aspect? If you watch any sport just for the entertainment you are going to be disapointed at times. However, if you watch and study to see how each fight unfolds maybe you would get something out of it.
Well said. Fighters have game plans they are trying to impose. While they want to please the crowd, they want more to win. Especially when you have a title or title shot on the line.
Did you see Toquinho hit that armbar from the back? Even when it is just stand up, you can only stand up if you can earn it with wrestling ability or respect for your ground game.
I thought BJ and Sherks boxing was pretty good on Saturday. A guy who started out as a wrestler and the other a BJJ guy usually aint going to be world class boxers thats just how it is but I guess the boxing only fans are just too stupid to relize that. Its alot different when your boxing barefooted with much smaller gloves and trying to keep focus on leg kicks and takedowns.
The Boxing people do not understand it. It proves the belief that you cannot know something unless you experience it. On the flip side I have a son, former collegiate wrestler, practices mixed martial arts (mostly jujitsu) It took him a long time to figure out that you just can not just walk in and shoot and take someone down.
