I just did a little research on this myself it looks like Sylvia was attempting to start a career in professional boxing, this fight was supposed to be a boxing match between the two. However at the last min they got a call from the commission saying this was an illegal match, Ray took no time to say, " I trained for 8 weeks to box we can get in the ring and do what we trained to do and no man sitting behind a desk should tell us weather or not we should fight we have both trained for it, so I am going to go in there and do what I trained to do and thats boxing, if your a man you would do the same thing and be a man of your word However if you want to kick and wrestle and take each other down to the ground we can do that as well" and at the last moment they put these two together in a MMA match, I have a feeling thats what they wanted to do anyways, they didnt want Sylvia to enter the boxing ring and actually box that would be murder. So they took the fight and the type of fight that would give Sylvia an advantage too bad his chin failed him ohh in about 8 seconds:yep
damn straight. great match maker for his sport, great marketing with the show but he took the circus act a little too far
Usually this stuff gets old very quick but strangely I find this to be funny every time I see it. Ray Mercer should be inducted into the boxing hall of fame just for this, if it were a football (soccer) match you'd be hearing "IT'S ALL GONE QUIET OVER THERE" from boxing fans.
Exactly and that's what's so funny about it. It's also the reason why these guys aren't world class and can't be taken seriously. If you can come in off the street with little or no MMA experience and beat a former UFC champ that easily your sport is a cruel joke period end of discusiioon. Somethig like this would never happen in boxing. Hell even a crap HW champ like John Ruiz would KO any of these guys if they ever decided to step foot in a boxing ring. And that's what separates UFC from boxing it takes years of practice and dedication to be great at it where as in UFC anyone can be great with little to no training...and a cool haircut.:deal
does this mean that ray mercer is a hw champ of one of those various mma organizations? i hope he has a long reign ko'ing all those random guys
I was invited by a friend to watch the 3rd fight between Sylvia and Arlovski. He was raving how these guys were skilled and good enough to be boxers. Worst display of 'strking' I've ever seen. They were nailing each other with 4 ounce gloves but I just didn't see the 'talent'. These MMA guys have very short shelf lives.
This is exactly why I stay away from MMA, most of them are the John Ruiz type hug you to death like fighters, not just Sylvia but nearly all of them love to rub a dub and hug and bring it to the floor for some man love etc... Boxing is far better than MMA always has been always will be
