Michael Kirkham, 30 years old, from Gaston, SC died this morning as a result of a head injury during his MMA event at USC Aiken Saturday. He was pronounced dead this morning at Aiken Regional Medical Center.
Kirkham was transported to Aiken Regional Medical Center after he was struck several times in the head. He was unresponsive when transported and never regained consciousness. He died of a brain hemorrhage. This was Kirkham’s first professional match. He had fought in MMA events 6 times previously as an amateur........................THATS CRAZY! REST IN PEACE!:-(

True but any more protection would make grappling a *****. This sport won't last after it's regulated.

At least we don't gotta here that boxing is more dangerous :nut

3 confirmed deaths so far in this sport. RIP

I think one important factor not being talked about is when you read the full article it says the guy was a Lightweight (155 pounds) and 6 foot 9. Im 155 and im 6 feet tall thats considered very tall for that weight and im incredibly skinny id imagine at 6 feet 9 this guy is very frail and looked close to death anyway. This fella had to have cut some serious weight im talking 40 plus pounds within a few days and the dehydration weakened his brain. 6'9 and 155 just isnt even close to normal just look at it like this Paul Williams is 6'1 and hes considered a freak for his size at that same weight imagine a guy 8 inches taller and the same weight.

There was this, Sam Vasquez and the 3rd was in a non sanctioned fight. Thats 2 and I guess yeah you can argue 3 deaths in 17 years boxing has on average 11 deaths which comes out to 187 deaths in 17 years compared to 3 in MMA. So for you to say boxing is less dangerous shows you are a complete and total moron. Yeah MMA is regulated in like 99 percent of the US but its not going to last :patsch Just like in 2005 when the sports popularity went up the charts all the boxing fans started running around saying its a fad give it 6 months Spike TV will cancel it. Hmm in 2010 and which is doing better in the States ? People get exicted for 2 boxing matches a year and then ***** cause it sucked. Every month people are hyped up for multiple MMA CARDS I say cards in caps because its not 1 good fight for 60 bucks its more like 45 for around 5-8 fights.

I never said boxing is less dangerous.. One is just as dangerous as the other.

Why don't you count all the boxing and MMA matches over the past 17 years while you're at it.

If they make the gloves safer then grappling will more or less be thrown out the window.

**** the numbers.. Death is death.

100%. You'll often find guys who got injured or died have a history of weight makinging issues. Dehydrating the body is crazy at such an elite athletic level that happens to be combat!
