I think it's a fair question, and I tend to agree boxing and MMA might seem like similar bed-fellows, but they are in fact very distant cousins
Neither of them are very close to real fighting. MMA is closer than Boxing but in no way does that equate to it being a superior sport. Its a different sport. I tried to like MMA i watched a bit of the UFC, it had me for a while, some of the finishes are monsterous. But i tired of it and at times even fast forwarded till i saw someody getting knocked out. I will watch highlight packages on it but thats it, ive stayed up 48 hours before to watch all the live Boxing that was on.
what does it matter anyway I feel this thread is just a catalyst for arguments mma is great for people who like it, boxing is great for people who like that. I say we enjoy them both there both great
Not only that but its the proverbial dead horse. its a topic that has been beaten to death. Its like debating whos to blame for why the Floyd/Manny fight was delayed for 5+ years. Pointless.
Well depends on where you are from, where i'm from tackling and rolling on the ground is considered to be for pussies, we pretty much just throw hands with the odd kick, so boxing is most definitely a closer fit then MMA
A lot of street fights end up going to the ground at some point, so aside from a one punch knockout, certain forms of Martial Arts/Mixed Martial arts would be more valuable to master compared to boxing.
Boxing is a sport and a discipline. In most disciplines, there are sets of rules. Boxing has more set of rules than mma, so in my opinion, it is a better discipline or sport to WATCH. The less rules involve the uglier it is to watch. Example are like football/ soccer and rugby. Rugby will never take over soccer as a more popular sport, because soccer has more discipline as you can not use your hand, so it takes more skill to hone within that set of discipline. As for closer to fighting, I don't see the point, boxing or mma is a sport with rules, fighting is not. The last thing you want to happened is to be involved in a fight in an uncontrolled environments without a comfort of a soft mat, laying in the floor grappling will get you killed. Somebody else can stab you from behind, smash your skull with a beer bottle. Having said that, any form of self defense is useful for survival, or even just keeping fit.
