MMA, looking like a bit of a joke right now?

The UFC has got boring. Especially the co and main events. IMO they need some rule changes to make the fights more exciting and not turn into gay porn.

 

I see it this way:

Really mediocre first quarter, very strong spring/early summer (good matchups and some good fights), average at best fall (and i'm being very generous because I really looked forward to Cain-Brock but that turned out to be a joke).

They will increase PPVs next year so it will only get worse. But I gotta really give credit to ZUFFA, they have branded their fans to a point that they can convince them that all these shows are incredible value for $50+.

The most interesting point is that the UFC for whatever reason hasn't created a new star from scratch since they broke out in 2005-2006. GSP got more popular and Brock was/maybe still is a marketing phenom but that was the WWE fans/converted MMA fans backing their man. If you still have Couture/Liddle/CroCop/Toney (lol) headlining PPV cards in 2010, there is a problem.

 

I thought last nights card was very strong. Next year should be a lot better than this year, considering the integration of all of WEC fighters.

 

Apart from Hughes Penn and Rampage Machida i thought it was pretty average.
Was interesting to see prospects Phil Davis and Falcao in action.
Dont understand why Griffin was on the prelims and didnt even make the main card.
Felt bad for Karo as well who seemed to have been stopped somewhat early. But was clearly hurt from the time the clinch was broken and didnt recover. He needs to retire and find a day job.
Glad Rampage came out to the PRIDE theme but it didnt have the same aura as it used to.

 

The UFC hasnt really taken alot of WWE fans. The appeal of Brock was because he was a superstar in the WWE and this is what piqued casual interest in him.
WWE fans by and large have very little interest in the UFC or MMA. But they are more than willing to support their wrestlers.

 

I disagree, maybe they aren't WWE fans now but a large majority were in the past 5 years.

TUF and the sport itself was on the verge of collapse had it not been for the Raw lead in to the first season and Brock brought a huge increase in overall PPV buys when it was looking like they were starting to stagnate.

 

TUF was revived because of Kimbo. And the UFC have been on the hunt for a superstar for some time. Brock was the perfect person for that because of his popularity in the WWE. May as well have been Hulk Hogan for all it was worth though. At the end of the day its just a popularity contest.

 

To TS: IF that's how you feel then do us and yourself a favor and don't watch and don't post about it on the forums. Problem solved.

Yes because a former muscian has exactly the same credentials for MMA as an all-american college wrestler, NCAA runner-up and winner with a record of 106-5 in college wrestling.

 

Brock's appeal clearly goes beyond his WWE fanbase (although that is something) given that even his UFC debut outdrew any WWE pay per view for North American pays he appeared on.

 

Griffin was on prelims because he was booked to beat Nik Lentz so Zuffa could fire Lentz as punishment for his performance against Winner. That obviously didn't happen, much to White et al's chargin.

Let's see audio101, I don't see your name or that of the whiny ass thread starter listed amongst the people that have not only been following and enjoying MMA but discussing it on these forums on a regular basis over the past year. So feel free to log off and face palm yourself while the rest of us enjoy the sport and discuss it a bit more.
