Anything goes in the world of MMA. Steroids are legalized. Anything people can put into their bodies is allowed and it becomes the wild west inside the octagon. Who would be the new champions? Who would rise to the top? Would anything change or would it be business as usual as Dana Needles White might say. :smoke

Terrible idea. Abuse of steroids is not healthy but very dangerous. It can lead to

    1) Heart diease

    2) Liver Diease

    3) Disfiguration of sexual organs as the body stops naturally producing testosterone

    4) Weakening of muscle tendons leading to increased likelyhood of tears

    5) Change in mental state - increased levels of aggression

If you let steroids be legal then you remove any limits on guys (just forcing them to cycle on and off reduces the damage their doing to themselves) which ultimately increases the pressure on guys who don't want them, to take them.

Brilliant tags, but Im of the opinion that most of the top MMA fighters are juicing already, so I dont think too much would be different

problem is and particularly with 5 minute rounds it would just go back to the old days where whoever is the biggest will win.
the werdums and cormiers will dissapear overnight. thats not a good thing for the overall health of the sport.

If you compare how fighters look now compared to how they look in Pride its clear that having a drugs testing regime does limit the use to some disagree. Most may be using (I'm not personally sure about tbh) but the drugs testing regime does limit the extent.

Good point to which I agree. I honestly think it's most training injuries and such that account for the use, as opposed to the roided up monsters of old enhancing their performance like Kerr, Coleman ect

Case in point, Thiago Silva, dude was off for a year or so, the temptation was obviously there to aid his recovery as the man has to earn a living

Yeah...In his autobiography Bret Hart tells the story of getting on steroids for the first time to aid with a knee injury that was threatening to stop him tour Japan.

Most of these guys would drop dead by 50 if they could juice to the max. How many NFL and WWE guys have died early steroid-related deaths? I've heard of a few NFL guys over the years dropping dead from enlarged hearts and heart problems. Also that 14 of the 51 wrestlers from Wrestlemania in 1991 died premature deaths. Damn, just read Macho Man Randy Savage died last May from heart problems. Sad

I agree that I think alot of fighters start on roids to heal up. Perhaps they think I'll get better quick then stop but they feel strong and get that mental edge and before you know it they are addicted.

So many of the fighters caught are on some sort of substance that has to do with cutting weight, healing from a big injury, medicine for pain etc

Not sure i agree with this. As there is no empirical evidence that proves any of those points. 'Steroid' symptoms circa accusations are widely open to interpretation. The problem with drugs is the stacks and combinations of drugs taken by guys who are primarily self medicating. The symptoms of various cycles varying greatly from one person to the next.
The reality is there are no palpable links to Heart and Liver disease because of steroid abuse. BUT combinations of drugs, which may also include recreational drugs or a predisposition to organ ailments or lifestyle may cause diseases to form.
By all accounts the potency of the stack is always going to dictate the severity of the symptoms. An excellent example being Andreas Münzer who suffered from multiple organ failures. On autopsy it was found that Munzer had little to no subcutaneous fat around his organs and his liver was literally falling apart. Munzer is of course an extreme example but that guy was doping since his teens and taking massive amounts of hormones in various stacks for well over a decade. He was also one of THE BEST conditioned bodybuilders of all times with a ridiculously low body fat ratio that ultimately killed him.
Conversely you have a guy like Arnie who overdosed on a stack and he's living a pretty healthy life well into his mid 60's. In addition there's plenty of guys from Arnies era living healthy lifestyles.

    Touching on this point:

Not really no. Extra test production in men will cause the Testes to shrink over time. But this takes years possibly decades of abuse to occur depending on the potency of the stack. Likewise in women they can see Clitoral enlargement because of the addition of male hormones. Whilst that's a change in the Genitalia id hardly call it a dis-figuration.

Trust me they dont start on gear because they want to recoup injurys faster. There's a fantastic amount of misinformation out there on 'steroids'. This is common place simply because guys are self medicating with drugs they know nothing about. All they know is 'steroids' make you bigger stronger and perform better.
Drug abuse is ubiquitous with wrestling. Especially the WWE/WWF. The problem those guys have is the aggressive schedules and road shows they have. So whilst the hormones help to sell their physiques and wrestling style they also help them wrestle back to back nights whilst putting their body through hell. Chris Benoit did that for over 20 years. I watched that guy 'work' through multiple severe concussions. Not good at all... Fans expect too much of 'our' athletes.
