I love boxing and it will always be my favorite sport and hopefully I will go pro in it but if I do not I could see myself attempting a MMA career since IMO being a prizefighter is one of the most glorifying jobs one can have but I'm wondering what MMA training is like just in case the boxing doesn't pan out. I know about boxing training since I am actually doing it but MMA training is something I know nothing about. Thanks!
Well, its like boxing training but you do different things. You train some sort of takedown and takedown defense, some sort of submission and submission defense, boxing, and non boxing striking. What specifically do you want to know?
You have to train in a lot more. If you want to be a well-rounded fighter that is....and in this day and age if you really want to get somewhere then you really would want to be. Train in kicks and knees, wrestling for takedowns and takedown defence, sambo/BJJ for grappling and learning submissions. Boxing/kickboxing/Muay Thai = Striking Sambo/BJJ = grappling on ground Wrestling greco roman/freestyle = getting your opponent to the floor or prevent yourself getting taken to the floor. Compared to boxing you basically need to train in a hell of a lot more areas. Of course in terms of physical conditioning things remain the same do roadwork/sparring/working the bags or mits, the same ****....
It's a helluva lot more skillsets you have to cover. I give pro MMA fighters all the respect in the world (well most of 'em) as the range of skills they are required to have is huge. As Ray Mercer demonstrated so ineptly against Kimbo, there's no use great stand-up skills if you are unable to defend against being taken down or have no clue what to do once you get there. Likewise you can't get away with being just a great grappler/juijitsu person either. You need skills in all 3 areas of fighting.
here is my sort of regimen. i do cardio everyday except sunday i lift 3-5x a week depending on my workout because i switch my workout up every 3 weeks for striking i do boxing, kickboxing, and am planning on starting savate grappling i dont do anything as of know but i am planning on starting up soon. for takedowns and defense i do folk, freestyle, and greco-roman wrestling. also your diet has to be strict only one cheat meal(not day) every other week and 7 meals a day
doublesuited I'm not a traitor as I said boxing is still imo and heart number 1. I just want to know what type of training is ahead of me in MMA if the boxing doesnt work out.
