really enjoyed the booth v artur fight last night....i think booth is on the run-in now, but thats another issue...it was a great entertaining fight... but, i wish fights like that would be commentated on better... below is an example of old school commentary that i would love to see back again.....now, bear with me...i know you cant compare last nights fight and this one...but try to imagine last nights fight with commentary in the style of this... it was still like a radio comentary back then mate,so the comentators were still fixed in that style where it was your job to describe everything that happens.its just been diluted over the years.
there were rounds last night where there was great action happening....and they were talking about ****...not making comment on what was happening in the ring.. i dunno...maybe just me
your right, the commentating lacks enthusiasm. i personally like showtime, hbo commentating and beleve every other tv network should model themselves on them. ie. 3man commentating team, a jim lampley ,larry merchant, a boxer or trainer in there. On youtube saw some old bbc harry carpentar,he was just awful and dull.
steve holdsworth /thread in all seriousness though nothing is worse than dave boy mccauley and that other ****wit, they're just loveably stupid. dave was a great fighter too, awful commentator.
Except for that ''get in there frank!'' line eh. Howard Cosell was overrated aswell imo. Hes well known and respected because he covered some of the biggest fights in history and made some memorable calls, but he made the fights seem boring. I was watching his coverage of Duran-Leonard the other day and he managed to make one of the greatest fights of all time sound boring. I never like to watch old fights thats hes covering.
I personally like the HBO fights where you have a knowledgeble boxing person like Emmanuel Stewart, Roy Jones, Lennox Lewis commentating. Also ESPN does a good job with Teddy Atlas. I think to become a good commentator you have to be either a boxer or trainer who can actually see what is happening in the fight and can breakdown the fight strategy for the fans. Also boxers and trainers know what is going on inside the boxer's head. What is frustrating and annoying is when a boxer throws say a right hand and the commentator comments on that and tells the audience when it is plain obvious. One such commentator is that Bob Sheridan, who talks too much nonsence. Often a great fight is spoiled by unknowledgeable commentators.
i like barry mcguigan comentating, glen mcrorys good to, i aint a lover of those who only see punches from the hometown man, its like everybodys got ears but need their eyes.:good
I always perfer the HBO commentary compared to the British commentary. For example look at the following fights between the two:- Tyson v Bruno 1 DLH v Vargas Castillio v Corales 1 Chavez v Taylor 1 Gatti v Ward trilogy USA commentary makes the fight more interesting and you learn much more. Also in British Commentary, it will be good just to dial in during the 1 min break and hear what the cornerman are saying. Also it would be good to have a translator on the British commentary as alot of boxers speak only Spanish.
WHY? Thats a shame. In the Pavlik v Hopkins fight, Pavlik cornerman were telling him to throw punches to Hopkins groin, as they were frustrated. Also Norman Stoney was quite a character in the corner of John Ruiz. As fans, we should be allowed to hear everything.
I dont know to be honest,im sure someone on the Brit forum can explain.I agree it takes something away from the tv coverage not being allowed to cover the coreners. HBO werent too happy about not being allowed to when they went to Britain to cover a naseem hamed fight.
