another thing about yesteryear - the likes of Joe Calzaghe could not just sit in cardiff and make 20 defences of their "world" title - if they want to become a world champion they would have to work their way up and take their shot against the real WORLD CHAMPION - even if that meant fighting on the other side of the world for the oppurtunity.

    not prepared to do that?

then the likes of Calzaghe would never have even fought for a world title let alone be a world champion.

the reason I pick on Calzaghe is not because he is a poor champion - but because he was able to become a world champion and make 20 defences most in cardiff - without ever fighting a fellow champion or rarely travelling abroad - until the end of his career.

    Lennox is like..........

One of the top five heavies of all time, easily.

So how would he not win the world title?

On a serious note, boxing would be much better off with a single governing body, with the respective regional commissions beneath it :deal

    What a stupid thread.

Its basically just a "what fighter do you want to disrespect" thread.

How can anyone here say which fighter wouldnt have won a world title in yesteryear?

"Yesteryear"? Keeping it nice and specific then?

Pretty much all of our elite fighters could dominate during certain periods of time. Haye, Hatton, Calzaghe would have been the world champion in their division at one point or another. Haye a few years before he was king, Calzaghe before and after Jones, and Hatton before Tszyu. However, stick Hatton in there with JCC or Pryor and he gets battered. Calzaghe would be schooled by Jones and Holyfield would eat Haye alive.

We'd do well in the reletively weak eras and have a harder time when a truly great fighter was around.

I agree with Dunky. "Yesteryear" is so loosely defined that it's a pointless thread. It has to be one specific era, otherwise people are just going to put their least favourites against an ATG and their favourites in a weak division.

If you wanted to match the fighters up against different divisions from throughout the years, this would be a great thread. But as it is, people are going to take advantage of how unspecific "yesteryear" is, and use that to suit their agenda.

    Judge them against all eras.

Some could be champions in some eras and not in other eras.

Its judging modern day champions against the whole of boxing history.
