Nope. We're talking Joe Louis "Bum of the Month" defenses. Wilder beats all the guys Joe Louis defended against. Who was going to beat Wilder? Al McCoy? Jack Roper? Gus Dorazio? Screw that.

Wilder successfully defends against everyone Louis defended against. Although, he may not get 25 defenses, because Joe had to rematch some when the first fights were close. There certainly wouldn't be two Billy Conn fights.

And Louis beats everyone Wilder defended against, except the 270-pound, switch-hitting Fury who beat Wilder last February.

Although, Joe Louis wouldn't fight southpaws. They gave him too much trouble. So Ortiz may have given him problems, too.

Don't you see the problem here?

The argument in favor of Louis, hangs on what Louis accomplished, and what Wilder did not accomplish.

The argument in favor of Wilder, hangs on what you think that Wilder could have done, and what you think Louis could not have done.

    Big problem there.

It also hangs on the assumption, that one fighters **** would have turned into gold in another era, and the other fighters gold would have turned into ****.

    A lot of massive assumptions!

Truth is most fighters with long reigns tend to drift into the same area Joe did. They may defend against some top fighters. But mostly not.

Virgil Hill had two long reigns. I remember groaning every time he signed to fight a Mike Peak or a David Vedder. Seems like most of his defenses came against that type.

Same with Dariusz Michaelczewski. Lots of filler. Seemed like for years he'd fight guys after Roy Jones beat them. Unless he was fighting someone even more awful like Joey DeGrandis.

Joe Calzaghe and Sven Ottke were champs for a long time. For most of their reigns, there was little difference between them. They were both defending against the Rick Thornberry's of the world. At the very end of his career, Calzaghe stepped it up a little.

Bernard Hopkins as a middleweight. Took him three chances to win a vacant belt. When he did, he fought mostly nobodies. But he stepped it up when he moved up in weight.

The main culprits now seem to be Bud Crawford and Demetrius Andrade. I think the best guy Andrade ever fought was Willie Nelson.

Not counting the fighters we tend to completely ignore, like Thammanoon Niyomtrong (AKA: Knockout Freshmart).

Wlad clearly he was constantly facing the top guy available but Sam Peter is mentioned among his best wins and he had a 10 year reign

Buck Smith was a journeyman type fighter with an official record like an old school ATG. He was 163-6 when he lost to Buddy McGirt

He said something thing “It’s not like I fight a bum a month...I fight 3-4 bums a month”
