Someone obviously hasnt studied Benny Leonard who took on the two best black lightweights at the time six days apart and obliterated both of them...
Let me clear this up for you all. Before you can really appreciate modern nutrition you need to understand the three most direct effects of it: 1. It makes you a better fighter. For example, a great fighter from 1935 who ate twigs and soil for dinner would not be as good as a **** fighter from today's era who eats protein shakes while still in the can. 2. It gives you the ability to fill swimming pools up with your sperm, which attracts super models who want to swim in it. 3. Manny Pacquiao KO1 Rocky Marciano Modern Nutrition
I don't understand people who have strong opinions on pre-depression boxers in general. Theirs so few tapes, and the ones that are even out there are so low quality it's really hard to tell whats going on. I can't judge hand speed from a tape thats 10FPS. I will never put Jack Dempsey or Jack Johnson in my top 10 because there's no enough clear video out there that allows to me accurately assess there skills. Boxers probably had more heart back than though. They fought more often, money was really hard to come by an boxing was the only way to make it for most of those dudes. The fights lasted longer, the gloves were a joke an offered no protection and the ref was like a ref on Fight Night when you turn TKO off. Just there to count you out.
Black fighters are dominating the heavyweight division right now. But modern nutrition is almost as important as skin colour, IMO. Old-timers used to eat slabs of meat and vegetables, but they didn't know that you can't process more than 12grams of protein a meal, and you absolutely need to eat 24 small meals a day and 79% of that needs to be powder supplements. This results in the old-timers standing no chance against even the most mediocre modern boxer or a regular subscriber to bodybuilding magazines. Obviously with access to supplements and modern nutrition and modern coaches, even a white guy like Jack Dempsey might have been able to develop a modern punch. Blacks are better though. M.N.
Modern athletes are fitter, stronger, and faster than those who went before. You can compare like with like. Just compare them in terms of accomplishments in their won eras. The fact that Jesse Owens wouldnt even win a medal in the modern NCAA,let alone an Olumpics doesnt make him less of a legend. In much the same way that Dempseyt would get murdered by the likes of the Klitschkos doesnt take away from his legacy. Babe Ruth wouldnt be able to compete in the modern MLB George Best wouldnt be able to compete in the modern Premiership. Jim Browne wouldnt be breaking many tackles in modern NFL etc, etc, etc
I take it there must be an epic thread based on 'Modern Nutrition"? Or is there a guy named MN?? Sorry, haven't been here long enough to appriciate the comments. MN... leads to James Toney?
Soley, of course not. A BIG aspect of it, yes sir I do. Things like power, reflexes, balance, speed, many of these qualities are closely tied to athleticism. And I do think that MODERN NUTRITION might help a little. A little. Along with anything modern. Before the heavybag and mitts were used, if you have two guys, one who was a caveman and did not use tools such as the bag and mitts and one that did, who do you fancy? Sure, modern toosl can assist in your development in anything.
If by modern nutrition you mean going back to the stuff we've been eating for millions of years instead of processed to death factory food, I'm all for it. I personally think many people in the past had much better diets than "modern" athletes. Take Ricky Hatton's training diet for example, it may have been "modern" but it's absolutely horrifying.
