What are your favourites, in the ring or out? Can be really famous if you like, maybe a little moment that not many other people have noticed or an anecdote. I'll kick off if you like...... I was re-watching Toney-McCallum I the other day, and there's a great little moment in the second round where they're both on the inside, Toney with his left shoulder turned in and right hand cocked about to find punching room; McCallum grabs him round the side and pivots deceptively quickly, spins Toney round, turns him out and clips him with a sharp right. Toney looks a mite surprised/shocked, although he recovers quickly, before grinning and shaking his head slightly as if to say ''Not many people get me with that one, you sneaky old *******'', and McCallum gives him the slightest nod in return unless I'm imagining it.
I thought that too with Toney McCallum but i think McCallum didn't really nod more of a touching there as a habit from the sparring headgear
Most fighters show respect for each other after the fight but one instance I remember best is after the 1st Galindez-Rossman fight. Galindez had been the big favorite but Rossman fought an excellent fight and really busted the champ up. In the 13th round, after the ref stopped the fight, a bloodied and weary Galindez looked briefly at the new champ and raised his right fist and nodded his head, giving him a salute. The good sportsmanship vanished for their 2nd fight though as Galindez, after Rossman quit on his stool with a broken hand, taunted the ex-champ and his camp.
Some recent ones I liked were Librado Andrade (who seems like the nicest fella) picking up Eric Lucas for his hometown crowd and walking him around a bit for everyone to applaud and Tyson Fury trying to get people to applaud for...Martin Rogan? I think Rogan, anyway. It was a good, if not awkward moment.
Mosley has always been a pretty good sport, although a few examples jump out, like when he knocked Margarito down at the end of the 8th round, and when Margo got up at the bell Shane specifically walked all the way across the ring in the opposite direction of his corner to touch gloves with Margarito.
michael Ayers v wayne rigby. In the 10th the 2 fighters stopped punching and both kinda nodded and touched gloves as Rigby had had enough and Ayers knew it, having already raised his hands up just before to indicate to the ref as if to say, "for **** sake man, will ya stop this?". Both guys started walking back to their corners. Referee woulda let the guy get killed, realised what was going on, and officially stopped the fight.
Holyfield-Bowe 1 After the bell at end of round 10 with the crowd going wild, Holy & Bowe tap each other on the stomach before walking back to their corners. A little gesture of mutual respect & admiration after producing one of the best rounds in heavyweight title fight history.
I like the interview between Lennox and Tyson after their fight. Lewis basically says no one could have stopped Tyson when he was in his prime. Lots of mutual respect there. I wish there had been a decent interview after the first Holy/Tyson fight All we got was Holyfield thanking god and Jesus every 5 seconds.
Theres a Vitali K interview back before Wlad fought Haye. Lewis walks up behind him with a smile on his face whilst the interview is going on and keeps tickling Vitali's ear, then Vitali turns and pulls Lennox's hat over his face. Was pretty funny and suprising to see them joking around like kids, with what they did to each other, and with them being a pair of giant carnivores
Vargas and Trinidad pretty much nodded to eachother at the end of every round Mosley and Delahoya in round 12, there was a break to wipe the ring and both put up their gloves for the crowd to stand up and then tapped each other's and went back at it. Mayweather and Castilo in the first fight
Well, the first one that immediately comes to mind is Arguello's treatment of Mancini after the fight. Told him he loves the relationship Ray had with his dad. Told him he'd be champion one day and said he would help Ray any way he could. Pure class. Another one I read in a book. Pretty sure the book was 'The Black Lights'. Billy Costello had just won a fight and was getting into a Limo outside the arena. He saw his opponent and his opponents mother waiting for a taxi or bus and sent the Limo over to them. RIP Billy Costello.
