My favorite example. It was said of Louis and Liston that they could knock out a man with a jab, but the closest I remember seeing a heavyweight come to actually achieving this in world title competition against uncompromised (unlike the influenza afflicted Schaaf) world class opposition was when Holmes dropped Ocasio for the first time. It came about 30 seconds after Larry wobbled him with a similar jab, and it looked like a shot where Holmes aimed for the back of his head, as Liston liked to put it. Jaws needed all of the referee's count of nine to barely struggle to his feet, and he did manage to get up more quickly from the subsequent knockdowns.

For Larry, this is an overlooked performance. Ossie may have had only 13 professional bouts, but the last 20 rounds of action he'd engaged in prior to Holmes were with Jimmy Young. He was as well prepared to deal with a great jab as any heavyweight contender of his era could have been. He defended actively against it, utilizing a bobbing and weaving crouch retreat and successfully picked some jabs off with his hands. It didn't matter.

A year later, Ocasio would clearly get the best of an undefeated Dokes in a ten round draw. Holmes unloaded 60 jabs in the second round of his rematch with Shavers, but to appreciate how good his jab could be at its very best, it helps to have first seen Ocasio-Young I & II, then Ocasio-Dokes I for context.

    As well as Loucif Hamani.

Marv's right jab was in reality what Liston's left jab was in legend. It was one of his power shots, a punch he really knew how to step into, and a strong case can be made that it was the most consistently powerful jab on a P4P basis possessed by any champion during the Queensbury era. Thumbless gloves reduce the impact of a jab by 50%, a key calculation by SRL when he got them mandated for his match with Hagler (topping this compromise in power even further still by having the gloves increased from eight to ten ounces).

I just watched the the Mike williams and your right he did indeed put williams down three times with the jab. Douglas definetly had a lot of talent despite his incosistencies.
He puts him for the first time with it @ 24 seconds and again @ 2:34.
