it used to be: fighters would pick the biggest challenges to prove a point, nowadays fighters choose opponents based on how lucrative that specific fight would be. boxing is a dead sport because of this. the competitive nature of the sport is based on who would make you the most money. i can literally think of 40 beautiful matchups off the top of my head that probably would never happen because of they're being promoted by different people or there's not enough money in those fights. RIP boxing you'll be missed :verysad
nah it's at its absolute worst today. we also have too many separate promotional companies, so a lot of fights great aren't even being made because of fighters from different promotions. like stevenson-kovalev. there is absolutely no valid reason why that fight hasn't happened yet.
This isnt some new concept. The day that there was no longer one world title, was the day it delegitimized "champions" You cant blame the fighters for wanting to make the most money they can in their incredibly dangerous profession.. And still, by and large, the most presitgious fights are also the most lucrative so they do still, by and large ,get made
Then fighters need to adapt. If they want the big money fights, they have to be marketable to the public. I agree that a lot of these fights aren't happening because of the coin, but on the flip side, some of the lesser likes - but more riskier types - need to market themselves better to get the top names. I think fighters are still adjusting to the current landscape, I think when they do, then we will start to see bigger fighters. I don't think its always going to be a stalemate that it is today.
Yes, Mayweather-Pac Canelo-Cotto this weekend. Wlad has fought pretty much every single ranked fighter over the past decade. I could go on and on. Far more top fights get made than dont. Its just the ones that dont stick out
I've posted this very topic before and it was removed for some reason not given. I agree. It started around the 80's when Tyson was at his peek. Moving Boxing from basic NBC, ABC, CBS, and even USA Network to HBO, SHo, and other premium cable channels has polluted the very essence boxing was all about. Best against the best for purpose of being the best. Instead now, it's what route can we take, least resistance for the most amount. The term "High risk, Lower reward" is a cop-out, IMO Professionals boxers should get paid their due and without the large premium cable networks, they will not be able too. It's a catch 22. I very much do enjoy the sport and will continue to support it regardless how well passed it's glory days it has become.
Thats how all sports and businesses are. Money makes the world go round. Anyone who doesn't understand that....well I don't know what to tell you.
