atsch he was 37 years old and well past his peak, the extra weight was just from age, not his natural weight,
So true,Sugarsean...This old adage applies to some people... " There is none so blind as people who have eyes, but do not see ". Age is a chain that greatly slows our reflexes...More so with fighters...b.b.
Yeah,in the basilio fight he was 37 and fighting at middleweight(although it was a great fight) it was far from a PRIME WW Ray.
Not bad. I am pretty damn sure those having Money winning this don't even know the basis about Ray Robinson like his birth name or the name of the very first man to ever defeat him. They probably even never took the time to watch footage of this legend. Those guy watched couple of highlights and think they know everything about Sugar. It's kind of scary.
its closer then you guys make it out to be, but that why your such a great group. Here we stand up for our heros and legends!
lol hmmm take it without sarcasm if thats what you meant. Let me try to clarify my earlier post better: I think the fight would be closer than people are mking it out to be I think SRR would end up wooping his ass and winning by KO Im happy that people here would think it is such a big mismatch. Because people these days don't understand how great the old timers were And its good to see a group of people who understand and know their greatness, especially when comparing them to todays fighters. ________ Try now!
Prime for prime? Robinson by close, but clear UD over 15 rounds, 9-6 or 8-7. Eddie Futch called Mayweather the best prospect he's seen since Robinson, but Mayweather is no Sugar Ray. He's approaching Sugar Ray's league IMO, but not quite there yet. Perhaps in a few years, Mayweather may put his skills to the test, correct me if I'm wrong, by giving away 10 or more pounds like Robinson did vs Joey Maxim. He's got to dispose of Pacquiao first. It's not Mayweather's fault, but he doesn't have a LaMotta, a Basilio, a Gene Fullmer, or a Kid Gavilan type fighter to his resume. This itself is the main reason why Robinson is ranked higher and would win a head to head, prime for prime matchup.
Well, Floyd did have the oppurtunity to fight bigger man like Margarito or Cotto. But they weren't bringing much to the table back then so...
I feel as though alot of people are not factoring important variables that could change the outcome of this fight. Let us remember that Robinson was a star of the 1940's, at a time when Boxing had never seen a fighter like himself, the typical boxer was a come-forward brawler, because boxing, moreso then than now, was primarily focused on the KO's. Robinson didn't regularly fight pure boxers of the pedigree of a FMJ, Whitaker, or Pep, and the boxer he did fight that was an ATG like Gavilan, gave him troubles. Now it's a given that had he been trained uner modern regiments he would probably more familiar with these styles, but would he still have the same explosiveness at his natural weight? what with changes in glove size, weigh in regulations, etc I'm skeptical that if this hypothetical matchup were to occur today that SRR would be as fast, and powerful at 147 as he was in the 40's. Mayweather on the other hand, probably would've been faster, and his punches might have more sting to them if he were to be a 147 welter in the 40's. Mayweather also dealt, with similar fighters to SRR, no not anywhere near his class but certainly he's dealt with them. Corrales, Mosley, etc etc. Now, that said I'm not saying Mayweather wins this but I think he has more of a chance then some would give him. Personally, I don't think it fair to have this match up until we see MAyweather tested against an ATG.
