    On the undercard...

Matt Doherty fought Briam Granado to a majority draw, fairly scored. Granado was the much faster man early on but quickly gassed after two rounds of excessive movement and pin-balling off the ropes and falling in with combos. Doherty, much slower of hand & foot, was able to start dialing in well-timed counter 1-2s on the face as his opponent was reduced to leaping in with bombs and missing by a mile.

Shakha Moore, surprisingly, got the nod by majority decision over Chris Gilbert in a rare case of the guy with the much uglier record getting the benefit of the doubt in a close fight throughout. I thought a draw was fair in this one (as did my friend scoring at ringside, pro judge Martha Tremblay), rather than wide either way, but I'm more okay with the other two judges' score of 59-55 Moore than had it been the same for Gilbert. They went from circling and flurrying to battling inside and even during heated exchanges were unable to ever substantially hurt or make a dent in each other due to Moore's excellent chin and dreadfully low power (and Gilbert being dead average in both categories) - but when he elected to, Moore proved able to outbox Gilbert with ease by simply turning him and laying a jab on his chin.

Aleksandra Magdziak-Lopes scored a lopsided, boring shutout with six rounds of stick-and-move against the aggressive but technically deficient MMA crossover Andria Wawro.

In the most impressive showing on the UC by far, Paddy Irwin of Ireland made his pro debut and lived up to or exceeded all of the (modest) hype. There is real power in his right cross, and he was already making his opponent dizzy with the first couple he landed. It would have been a KO1 but for Irwin taking it slow and proving to have a cautious stalker's mentality, preferring to break down his foe with right hands on the body to get the hands to drop even though scoring up top (and dealing significant damage each time) was no problem from the opening bell. He did come off a bit clueless and ineffective when he inexplicably allowed Theo Desjardin to press him into the ropes for a minute or so, and boxing on the back-foot is clearly not his natural 'comfort zone'. Still, this was only his debut, and his power and precision with that money punch are more than a lot of newcomers have to build on.
