Montell Griffin deserves credit for the first Jones fight.

One of my favorite stylistic matchups ever. And as a Jones fan I can appreciate how good Griffin really performed. Griffin took more rounds from prime Jones than any other fighter, and Jones was clearly bothered by Griffin's style which led to his DQ.

    Ya'll musta forgot.. :yep

Griffin was giving Roy fits for the first half of the fight, but it was evident Roy had him figured out in the second half, had griffin hurt, and was close to legitimately finishing him. Griffin deserves an Oscar for his face-first plummet into the mat when Roy clearly didn't even hit him that hard.

It was a great moment for Roy. However, fighting pissed off doesn't always work out for the best.

Jones was en route to a UD...that woulda been a 10-8 round-lets say he never hit him on the ground and Griffin got up....He woulda had a 1 point lead on 1 score card...a 3point lead on 1 scorecard and a 4 point lead on the other scorecard...Griffin was trouble for a few rounds but nothing special!

What that fight showed is what Eddie Futch could do to break down and nuetralize Jones. It wasn't as if he had a prize pupil in there and his guy had every physical disadvantage possible going into the fight. But Futch had his guy prepared and you'd think a 5'5" guy would have zero success against Jones.

Real good judgement by Griffin firning Futch for the rematch. That ranks right up there with Berbick dropping Futch for the Tyson bout.

The first half of the fight wasn't a great performance for Jones.

Griffin did well but Jones would definitely have won.

Just think what a prime Calzaghe would've done to Roy back then.
