i felt that jones was gettign outboxed and outhustled. and also to me it looked like a griffin victory was only half an hour away before the weired "i'm knocked out while i was down routine" your thoughts.
Eddie Futches mastermind had Griffen making Jones a little befuddled for a few rounds. The fight made Jones very frustrated but eventually Jones starting touching him, and got over anxious and hit Griffen when he was down. Montell had a crap chin when he got hit, it showed big time in the second fight as well. Im not sure Griffen could have sustained enough for a victory in the first fight, Jones started catching up to him.
Jones would've been DQ'd anyway, but Griffin totally faked that face-first slump. Had that incident never happened, I firmly believe Roy would've stopped Montell in that round once he got up or the next. Great performance by Griffin for a while though. (Antonio Margarito did the same thing to Cotto though, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone mention it)
true but i dont completly see the similarity's with cotto. cotto was actually getting beaten up....badly on the other hand griffin calmly went to a knee, got hit, said somthing to the ref....then slowly give way all honesty i have no quams with him pretending to be knocked out he is there to win the fight. and anyways it was a justification for a DQ he just put the exclemation mark on it. watching it again, i noticed how griffin backs up jones into a corner becuase roy doesnt know what he is doing.
lmao he was def. knocked out...he landed strsight on his ****en face....if he was pretending he would at least cover up with his hands while going down...
I really don't believe he was KO'd. I really don't. He got hit, looked up, appealed, then decided to slump onto the canvas because he knew that would force the ref to call the DQ - he knew he was going to get stopped shortly anyway. I'm sure Lederman says the same thing in the aftermath on the commentary. I can understand why you guys think he was really KO'd, but after watching the incident a few times, I disagree. It was a piece of ingenious, strategic, calculated and pretty much undetectable play-acting.
I never intimated that I thought there was any similarity whatsoever between the Jones-Griffin fight and the Cotto-Margarito fight. All I'm saying is Jones punched Griffin while Griffin was on one knee. Margarito did the same to Cotto, but it is never mentioned. "Fact".
How tall was Griffin again? Something like 5'9? Love it when short guys accomplish the kind of things he did.
Griffin's strategy layed down by Futch worked a treat. He had Griffin timing Jones with right hands. Countering and leading with them. The result of those punches showed as Jones's left eye was swollen. Griffin's style of fighting out of a crouch confused Jones somewhat as well. Jones just gambled for the rematch, and it paid off. He knew letting Griffin into the fight again and going some rounds would be risky business.
I don't know who would've gone on to win had the DQ not happened, but I agree that I felt Griffin was getting the better of the majority of the fight. He was consistently landing the cleaner punches, and IMO may have uncovered the gameplan for beating Roy that Glen Johnson later used successfully. If Griffin had been any kind of puncher, Jones likely would've been KO'd in that fight as well. He was getting hit with punches flush. Jones had his spurts and managed to hurt Griffin a couple of times, and that's what kept the fight close. For example, I had Griffin winning the 7th round, but then he suffered a flash knockdown late and lost it. Still I thought Griffin should've been ahead by at least a point or two going into the 9th round.
I don't believe Jones looked too impressive in the rematch. Obviously a first round ko is good, but I thought he fluked it.
