Jones would’ve been ahead by at least a point after round 9. I think it’s wishful thinking to assume Griffin would’ve gotten the better of the last 3 rounds given the way the momentum had shifted. That’s if he even lasted the last 3 rounds, which in itself is unlikely.

Looked to me like he caught Griffin with a good punch, but I wouldn't say he'd figured him out.

Round 8 was a good round for Griffin.

He was 1 round up on 2 score cards going into the 9th. So if he hadn’t have hit him whilst he was down, he’d have gone into the 10th round 3 points up on 2 cards, and 1 point up on the other.

I get that. But I don’t think Roy was ever going to get deducted points. A DQ was always on the cards. But if we look at a hypothetical scenario where he hadn’t have hit him whilst he was down, he’d have won that round on a score of 10-8 had Griffin survived. So he’d have been 3 points up on 2 cards and 1 point up on the other going into the 10th.

I think it’s highly unlikely that Griffin would have gone on to have won the fight.

He was, the ref said if Griffin could have continued he was going to take 2 points off Jones.

That's why some think he faked that he couldn't continue. Because it was only a DQ if Griffin stayed down.

It's a shame we never got to find out.

    I’m with you.

I wasn’t thinking about a scenario where he’d have continued.

Yes, that would have been extremely interesting. Because Roy would have been down on every card going into the 10th, and obviously extremely frustrated.

I wonder if Montell regrets not getting up.

With a full 5 minutes, and Roy's momentum gone, it really is game on.

He had the option for the victory there and then and took it, imo. I bet with the way the rematch went, he regrets it massively.

I had Griffin up by about 1 point.Had it not been for the DQ, I have a hard time seeing Montell winning the decision.Looked like the tide had turned

It was a big round for Jones, no doubt. Sometimes a big punch is enough to turn the tide for the remainder of the fight, sometimes a minute is enough to recover effectively.

In that 9th round, I don't think Jones looked to have sussed Montell out. He just landed a very hard right hand. The kind that Montell had been slipping all night long. Would he have landed it again in the 10th or would he have still been backed up shipping left hooks? I honestly don't know.

What we do know, is Montell was given another bite of the cherry and blew it big time. He sacked his head coach, refused to warm up and got destroyed in a round.
