The man who knocked James Toney out of the top 10 P4P lists in 1996, and gave RJJ his first loss, may have gone out a winner last week. Griffin beat LHW Corey Cummings (16-2, 12 KOs) via UD 10, scoring a KD in the third round. I am not sure whether or not this was his last fight, but boxrec did mention that Griffin "went out a winner" last week. His record stands at 49-7 (30 KOs), maybe he will fight one last time for win number 50. At any rate, congrats to Montell for a stellar boxing career. :good
I hope he has retired, would be a shame if he suffered losses to journeyman now seeing as despite having 7 defeats he's only lost to some very good fighters, RJJ, Taver, Johnson, Harding, Michalczewski, Hoye, Cesar Gonzalez.
Id like him to go out and get 50 just for another little millstone just make sure its a bum id hate to see a good classy fighter like Montell get hurt.
True that. I'd like to add, only RJJ and Michalczewski really beat him in his prime...the 2 best LHW's of the last 20 years. The Harding fight was a robbery and the rest beat an older, shopworn Griffin.
I'm being an ass here but you all know he didn't really beat Toney or RJJ... still, much respect to Griffin, fighting the way he did, performing like he did against these two ATGs, especially for being a very small LHW, shows he was a great fighter with lots of skill and heart. He gave Toney a tough fight when he had only 14 pro fights (he lost a close decision imo) - that alone makes him a great fighter.
I was at the fight in Chicago. Montell looked pretty good, won every single round and even hurt the guy and scored a knockdown in the third or fourth round. He tired in the last few rounds and got hit a little, but the guy he was fighting, though game, didn't really have the tools to do much of anything. He talked for a little to the crowd after the fight was over (it was in his home town of Chicago) and it didn't seem like he had any intention of retiring immediately. He's still more than capable of beating guys at this level, and I don't think he's really in danger of getting embarrassed, but he will get outworked by someone of a slightly higher level, and beat soundly by any of the top guys. (though I doubt even he thinks otherwise.) Also of note, Kid Diamond was on the undercard. He looked very sloppy though he got a TKO. The opponent (extremely limited) quit on his stool with some sort of shoulder problem. I think it was probably just ring rust, but I hope he takes another fight or two at that level before he steps it up. Was a fun card, lots of hispanic fans and a couple good scraps on the undercard.
Good news, I'd like for him to go out and get that 50th win. :good Cummings was a decent fringe contender at LHW, I was surprised Montell did this well at his age. Cummings fought an even fight with Butler in that SD loss of his, back when Butler was on a major roll.
Yeah, Cummings wasn't bad, it just goes to show the difference between a real elite guy (even if severely faded) and a tough, game, but fundamentally limited fighter. Montell's accuracy and variety were still there, and he must have landed 150 jabs. I was amazed Cummings was able to keep coming, and, as I said, actually trouble Montell a bit in a couple late rounds, despite eating flush shot after flush shot. Really tough guy, and he didn't even have any real facial damage, though Montell was never known for his power. It's fun to see an old guy go out there and do it. He has that same thing that Toney has where, even if he's not in top shape, he is so relaxed and at ease he can buy time and do just enough to conserve energy and never get in any real trouble. I always liked Montell, although like the earlier poster I thought James Toney won both of there fights. You can still see his class in there even though he has physically deteriorated.
Just wish I could get a word out to Montell...I am his old neighbor when he was starting out...just in trainning and my daughter that was only 7 at the time loved him and now has a son of her own....sure would love to get a word to him if anyone knows how..Debby in California...(Dallas' mom)
Sorry Debby, I've got no idea. There are many matchmakers/managers posting over at boxrec.com however, and if you make a thread in their forums they might be able to help you. Either that, or try and google a contact for Montell's promotional team or manager. Hope that helps. :good
