Assuming that Montell Griffin never fights another name fighter post his last Glen Johnson bout, how does he hold up against the other LHWs of his era? IMO, he was no great, but I think time will be kinder to him than many others given the fact that he really did manage to face everyone at one time or another, beat at least one ATG (Toney) and only managed to look badly outclassed by a few other ATGs. While there would be about zero public interest in Jones v. Griffin 3, as a purely stylistic matter, I think this would be an interesting matchup at this point in their careers.
hes had a great career. Wins over 2 atgs, won the a couple titles, and fought the best the division had to offer from 96-06. much respect
Third best LHW of his generation (fourth if you include Hill as part of his generation). In his prime he beat an in-shape prime Toney, and had wins over Harmon, Lathon, Ka-Dy King and Roy Jones. Only really lost to Jones and Michalczewski in his prime (Harding decision was a robbery).
When you consider that Monte was only 5'7 fighting lt heavyweights, it really shows you that he was a good fighter. He has nothing to be ashamed of, he fought all comers of his era and he was an Olympian. Great defense and all around boxing skills..
Don't mind this guy. He hasn't figured out that he can build up his own fighter without tearing others down. He's a little transparent.
The guy is underrated IMO, being 5'7 and winning against all those light heavys should deserve props alone. You got to be ****in skilled to survive at that weight with that height.
I think Montell was at the correct weight. His primary asset was the ability to throw off those taller fighters using a crouch and defensive moves that were very difficult to time. He gave Jones fits in their first fight for several rounds, before Roy figured him out and Montell's legs started to fatigue a bit.
You make a great point that I never considered but its so clear now. It appears the one thing that can affect good boxers/defensive gurus is their legs. As their legs fade, regardless of their skill leve their overall repetoire begins to erode. ie, Chris Byrd (ironically Monte's Olympic teammate).
a lot of people forget that griffin was giving roy a ton of trouble before he broke through with the knockdown.
Have you seen the first fight? Do you know who was winning? Let me give you a head start it wasnt Montel. Montel was on his way to being KO`ed.But instead he spoiled his way to a DQ when Jones hit him whilst he was on one knee.Jones in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM was exposed on that night. His "win" over Jones doesnt even mean anything. The rematch was what happens when you **** of Roy Jones. He got his ass handed to him on a plate and couldnt even stand up staggering around the ring like Trevor Berbick.
Yeah nice comparison.RJJ at 75 vs Griffin and RJJ coming down from heavy vs Tarver. Those fights were 9 years apart and GLARINGLY diffrent circumstances. Nice.:smooch
