Seriously - this was a give and take WAR. And this comes from someone who is no big fan of smaller weight fighters, generally speaking. It was without a doubt one of the better fights I've seen all year. It's not Corrales-Castillo, but it isn't THAT far below it either. Very much worth checking out!

SOunds like a great fight.. Didn't expect it though. I though it would have been an easy fight for MOntiel.

 

Obviously he has a very good chin. Didn't get blown out in a round like Dunne or Bautista and Montiel is a seasoned top level guy with some pop and Melendez took a licking.

 

Yes, it'd be a great fight. Mijares is a work in progress, he has a great defence but often resorts to fighting the other guys fight, this was evident in the first Kawashima(sp) bout where he stood inside slugging when he should have been commanding with that great jab and picking him off.

He took care of him second time around, so I hope that he's refining with experience, the kid has endless potential and at just turned 26, a couple of years to hopefully cement a legacy for himself, because he's really talented and has just about every intangible but punching power available. His jab off the back foot is one of the best I've ever seen personally.

Montiel is no 2nd rater, he's an established top crop fighter, so Mijares will have to work for it since Mijares is no defensive fighter, albeit more defensive than Montiel is.

 

Very solid. Not granite, but solid. Wally Mathews said something that I think is very pertinent when evaluating chin strength: "The only time I question a man's chin is when he gets knocked down and doesn't get up."

Guys who are able to get up from the canvas, even if they visit it more often, tend to have better chins than those who get laid out cold. It's the quality, not the quantity, of the knockdown that counts.

I figured this would happened. I was exhausted and didn't think the fight would be all that after round one. So I shut off the tv and knocked out with the quickness. Now what do I read when I go to boxing sites for the result...I missed a so called FOTY candidate. atsch Oh well, I'll download it now and watch it when I get home tonight.

 

Too many people on this site get offended about people not watching the small guys. They need to be exciting and dominant. They are that sometimes but not always. The ones that are exciting and dominant are getting recognition i.e. Marquez, Vasquez etc
