Marquez was a really, really big puncher back then. There aren't many fighters I don't think be couldn't stop, and Montiel isn't one of them.

    Marquez KO7.

Its obvious you never seen a Rafa bantamweight fight at 118. Montiel beats a fighter who hasnt been tested at the world level yet and you fools are acting like Montiel is a ATG at 118, forgetting the fact that he was getting schooled before the knockout.

Marquez's KO ratio at 118 was near 90% and thats over guys like Mabuza, Austin and too sharp Johnson. The same Johnson that schooled Montiel after his not too long losses to Marquez.

Montiel has no where near the boxing skill set that Austin and Johnson possesed. Montiel is a Puncher-Boxer he would rather have the fight be kept on the inside than the outside. If this comes to a brawl you're testing Montiel who is a more natural flyweight against one of the hardest bantamweight puncher's ever, you would have to feel very confident in Montiel's chin to even consider a win for Montiel who has been floored before by much lesser fighters.

Schooled Montiel but barely won a Majority Decision, from what I remember Montiel started slow and was getting killed to the body. He came on late but it was too little too late.

I thought Johnson deserved the decision but it wasn't a "Schooling" by any means.

We agree to disagree, no reason to get crazy about mythical match-ups imo.

I really think you're confused here, I never outright picked Montiel to win. I said it was a "Toss Up" Austin was a good boxer but had terrible foot work and a suspect chin, He almost got knocked out by Sergio Aguila if I remember correctly. Aguila was a journeyman who had him out on his feet after droping him hard, too bad Aguila was pretty much a bum and didn't know wtf to do. Montiel would have to Box from the outside and look for angles against Marquez, no way he wins a brawl since I already said Marquez is one of the hardest punching Bantams probably ever.

The Hasegawa was a great win no doubt and Montiel is proving to be something special by beating and competing with the best in 3 weight classes. But come on he hasnt done much at bantam yet and you guys are saying he can compete with some of the ATGs of the division. Thats as similiar as debating a Pacquiao/Tito matchup at 147, it's not right.

I never seen the Aguila fight so I cant say anything about it, but I differ on your opinion about Austin. He was a masterful boxer and was very underappreciated because of the weight class he was in. Granted Rafa got him on the decline but it's still considered a great win.

Agree to disagree then, Marquez is much bigger like you said Montiel is probably a natural jr Bantam or Flyweight. The only reason I think Montiel has a good shot is because i think his fast reflexes and awkward punches can get to Marquez. I would like to see Montiel face either Winner of Perez/Mares or Donaire next, he needs to establish himself at Bantam. A rematch with Hasegawa in Mexico or the US would be another great fight I would like to see, I think Montiel Ko's him again though.

At 118, Rafa should be favored. More proven, better boxer, and can punch well.

I feel that Marquez's chin would hold up A LOT more better than Hasegawa's did and Montiel always came off as a body puncher to me rather than a headhunter. If he doesnt fight a Hasegawa rematch next I like to see him try to make history and be the first Mexican to win 4 titles in 4 different divisons by moving up to fight Nishioka at featherweight. It's something everyone is looking at Morales,Barrera,JMM and Arce in a sort of race, but with his impressive display against Honz it looks very feasible for him moreso than it is for the other 4.

How do you see him going up against Nishioka? Haven't seen this guy yet.

I think he is maxing out already at 118. I actually love to see him stay there and clean it out.

Not highly at all. Gonzalez was outboxing him until his chin shattered on him and the last guy he fought was an unknown who was beating him to the punch until he got clocked. If Montiel can take Nishioka's power with ease he could win an easy decision, even if it is in Japan.
