I was thinking about this as that fight progressed saturday. I think that Duran beats him. First, unpredictablility of attack; Hatton was easier to time than Duran would have been, and much more effectively awkward than Ricky was. Second, more body punching. Third, more stamina. Fourth, were talking about skills like Mayweather hasn't seen.
Thown in a few snarls by Duran, hair flying, and the minimum of respect for PBF's female companions. That should do the trick !
Mayweather is the only fighter out there right now that I think is great in terms of all time legacy, so I don't mean to cut him down in saying Duran beats him, but Duran has the exact style that would beat him. Awful night for Mayweather.
There is absolutely no comparison with montreal duran and hatton. (as much as i like hatton.) duran had a superb defense, hit much harder, straighter and had every punch in the book with either hand, could jab his way in,would never have been hurt by mayweather, had great 15 round stamina,Had ferocious educated agression, could box from the outside, had exceptional reflexes, moved his head and upper body, was an exceptional infighter complete with dirty tricks (without smothering his work ala hatton.) ,carried 147 much much better than hatton (hatton is no welter at all.) and would have scared the living **** out of floyd and roger prefight... I cant say if roberto would have stopped floyd as there are some unanswered questions about floyd (and i will give him the benefit of the doubt.) and he might run for his life when he realised what he was up against....
As Duran did with SRL in Montreal, he'd have PBF beaten on the scorecards after ten rounds of action. Too smart, too skilled, too experienced, too aggressive, too unpredictable, too durable, and he'd beat a relentless tattooing on his target's body. Feinting is largely a lost art today, but Duran feinted Palomino and SRL into knots. He'd immediately use his feints to discover PBF's defensive reactions, then direct his attack accordingly. PBF would discover, as Davey Moore did, that Duran was a great streetfighter who learned many of his tricks outside the confines of a boxing gym. Like many world class boxers of his generation, PBF is a second generation pugilist who never had the opportunity to experience the hardscrabble necessity of having to fight for survival in the real world. As was the case with Dempsey, the ring was Duran's jungle. Duran was a master of headgames. At Montreal, he got inside SRL's head by calling his wife a *****, coaxing Ray into trench warfare, and completely disarmed a braced Palomino by asking Carlos for his autograph. He'd know the appropriate tact for employing in prefight interplay. Unless he speaks Spanish, PBF wouldn't even have a chance to try reciprocating. As Ray Arcel put it about El Cholo after his upset of The Blade, "I think he may know more about boxing than I do!" Enquirer pointed out that we have never discovered just how tough PBF actually is, so I will also give him the benefit of the doubt for now, and say: Duran UD 15 PBF
Duran would intimidate, harass, and humiliate Mayweather into defeat after 13 rounds of action, with Mayweather crying a couple of times during the fight.
Mayweather wins and he wins easily. Had Leonard fought like he did in the second fight durring the first fight. He'd have frustrted Duran in to submission. Duran didn't quit because the fight was too soon, or because of an injury. He quit becuse he was being out-classed. Duran did not domanate Leonard in the first fight. He won a close hard fought decision in which Leonard was with him step for step. Put in another set of Judges and Leonard could likely have been the winner. Mayweather would fight Duran in a manner closer to Leonard in the second fight. Controling the distance and sucking him in for counter shots while blocking and slipping Duran's.
It's difficult to gauge how Durans over all toughness and grit would compare to PBF's skill and athletism. You could envision a scenario in which Duran just bulldozed through PBF and roughs him up, but I think Floyd has a bit of a gritty side that sometimes gets lost in his character. Also his athletic ability (at his best) was spectacular and I could envision him frustrating Duran and making him look like a wild sloppy slugger. In the end the truth probably falls somewhere in between and I'd go with Duran by close split decision.
Duran would outhustle him the entire night. Mayweather would do well enough defensively, but not be good enough offensively to win more than maybe 4 rounds. Duran by UD.
